Obituary: Peterson, Roy Stanley
Age 88
Roy was born and raised in Spokane, the son of Swedish immigrants Hjalmar and Freda Peterson.
His father owned the Millwood Meat Market on Argonne Road, and Roy worked there with his dad.
The family fished the lakes surrounding Spokane and especially enjoyed their time at Hauser and Priest Lakes.
Hjalmar eventually built a family cabin at Priest in the late 1940s.
Roy graduated from West Valley High School at age 16 and then from Washington State University (Alpha Tau Omega fraternity) and received a Master’s degree in Mechanical Engineering from Oregon State University.
He met Marjorie, the love of his life, at WSU on a blind date.
They married in 1946.
He served in the Navy in active duty during WWII, then was recalled during the Korean War and stationed in Hawaii, where their first daughter, Anne Carin, was born.
They settled in Richland, where Roy was employed as a Mechanical Engineer at the Hanford N Reactor and a second daughter, Lisa Pauline, was born.
Roy and Marjorie loved to fish and camp all around the Northwest.
He also loved gardening, birding, stamp collecting, photography, classical music, international travel and spending time with family and their many friends.
He enjoyed memberships with ASME, Naval Reserve, Audubon Society and a couples’ bridge club for more than 50 years.
In 1993 Roy and Marjorie moved to the Village at Canyon Lakes, a retirement community in Kennewick.
Roy was a kind, gentle and big-hearted gentleman who was always available to lend a hand, tell a story and give back to his family, friends and community.
We will miss his welcoming smile and great spirit.
He brought joy to many during his life.
He was preceded in death by his wife of 66 years, Marjorie Maris Peterson, who died in January of 2012.
He is survived by his daughters Annie Shiffer and husband Jeff (Spokane), Lisa Peterson and husband Tom Horton (Mercer Island), grandkids Charles, Laura and Ellen Horton, brother Glen Peterson (Fran) of Port Townsend and many nephews, nieces and cousins.
A memorial service will be held at Central United Protestant Church, 1124 Stevens Drive, Richland, WA on September 21, 2013 at 2:00pm.
