Obituary: Herman, Jack Richard

Age 90

HERMAN, Jack Richard (Age 90) Jack was born in Lewiston Idaho and grew up in Spokane Washington attending both Lewis and Clark and North Central High Schools.

He enlisted in the Army Air Corp and served as a B-17 Crew Chief during World War II.

While serving in the San Francisco Bay area, he met the love of his life Janice, in an elevator!

They married in 1942 and began their family while living in various bases around the country.

They settled in Spokane after he separated from the military with the rank of Staff Sargent; Jack worked for the Telephone Company and retired in 1992.

After retiring Jack and Janice enjoyed their many years of retirement in various locations.

They ultimately settled in Coeur d’ Alene Idaho.

Jack and Janice enjoyed dancing together anytime and anyplace, in fact after Janice passed away, Jack would dance her around the room on Saturday evenings, holidays and New Year’s Eve.

They enjoyed traveling and visiting with their friends and family.

Jack dabbled in oil painting and became quite good at painting scenes of the ocean and the Arizona mountains.

He was too shy to share many of his paintings with others but sometimes he would give one away if a person expressed enough interest.

Jack was a quiet and sensitive individual who enjoyed letting Janice carry on the conversation but would most often add humorous side comments or banter, as he felt appropriate.

His humor was oftentimes dry or complicated but he enjoyed building up to the punch line or leaving the audience wondering if the story was in fact true or not.

Those who knew him well could tell by the twinkle in his sky-blue eyes.

Jack had made several friendships in the past few years, some that would not admit to seeing him drive his van or who would bring him an adult beverage or even a chocolate milk shake or two (Denise), these were very special friendships and were much appreciated by Jack.

Jack and Janice were proud of their children Carol, Nancy and Michael and enjoyed their time with them, their grand children and great-grand children.

Jack was preceded in death by his parents and brother.

In 2009 his loving wife Janice; his daughter, Nancy (Toff) in 2001; grandson, Kevin Toff in 2002; grandson, Paul-Michael Herman 2003.

Jack is survived by his daughter, Carol (Coleman), her husband Ken; son, Michael Herman, his wife Teriann; grandchildren, Jayme Adams and Amber Coleman, husband Dan, Ashleigh Herman, Allison Toff, father Ron; and four great-grandchildren; numerous nieces, nephews, cousins and their children.

There will be a private service for the immediate family.

In lieu of flowers or gifts the family suggests making donations to your favorite charities or having a chocolate milkshake in his honor!
