Obituary: Hanson, Paul
Paul was born in Newport, ID, and raised at “The Settlement,” near Priest River.
He was one of 12 children born to John and Emma Hanson after they emigrated from Sweden to the United States.
Paul started working at a very early age in the woods near Priest Lake.
His time was spent “running” a team of work horses at the Diamond Match “Camp 9” area on Upper Priest Lake.
They would skid the logs to a water flume that took the logs down to the lake.
From here, “log drives” were conducted in which the logs were floated down the lake to the lumber mill in Priest River.
Besides logging, Paul did a number of other career activities, including operating the Pastime Bar and Pool Hall.
In 1939, Paul married Muriel Roberg.
They bought a house in Dover, where they raised their two daughters, Patty and Sharon, and their son, Carl.
Paul was called upon to serve in the Army in the South Pacific during World War II.
He was honorably discharged in 1946.
Paul moved out of Dover in 2004, and into the Alpine Vista Apartments, where he resided until his passing.
He enjoyed his time there, as well as his time visiting with friends at local Sandpoint establishments, including Connie’s & the 219 Lounge.
Paul is survived by his brother Wally of Seattle, WA; his daughters Sharon Sulzle (Tim), Patty Thomson, both of Spokane, and son Carl Hanson (Debbie) of West Richland, WA.
; six grandchildren: Stacey Mohr (Sean), Tricia Cebriak (Jason), Leann Bass (Dave), Tina Sulzle, TJ Sulzle (Carly), Matthew Hanson, and Jonathan Hanson; and seven great-grandchildren: Kade and Jagger Mohr, Gunnar and Ryson Cebriak, Jesse Van Winkle, River Isabella Sulzle, and Brixton Sulzle.
Paul was preceded in death by his beloved wife Murial Hanson, their infant son Paul Jr., his brothers Hans, Ole, Alec, Eric, John and Leslie, and his sisters Anna, Gladys, Carrie and Vera.
A celebration of Paul’s life and service to his country will be held on Sunday April 13 from 1:00 p.m. to 3:00 p.m. at the VFW Hall, 1325 Pine Street, Sandpoint, ID.
