Obituary: Malloy, Robert W.

Age 88

MALLOY, Robert W. Bob was one of the unsung heroes of his generation.

Hardworking, steadfast and generous to the end he died peacefully August 24, 2014 surrounded by family.

Diagnosed with Parkinson’s in 2001, he persevered accepting the challenge with quiet fortitude and dignity that carried right through his recent and short association with cancer.

Bob was born December 10, 1925 in Olympia, WA to William A. Malloy and Mabel Hardy Malloy.

He graduated from St. Michael’s Catholic Grade School then Olympia High School.

In January of 1944 he enlisted in the Navy serving on a minesweeper in the South Pacific and Japan during the height of WWII.

After the war he married the love of his life, Geraldine Gregor, on June 3, 1950.

They enjoyed 64 blessed years together.

Following the birth of their first daughter and graduation from St. Martin’s College the family moved to Astoria, OR where Bob worked at Astoria Plywood and welcomed the birth of a second daughter.

The final move to Spokane, WA came in 1953, when he joined with his father-in-law and brother in building and operating the Idaho Veneer Company, a veneer, plywood manufacturing and sawmill plant in Post Falls, Idaho.

The family put down roots in the Spokane Valley and grew with the addition of three more daughters and six sons.

Bob’s passion was his family and church, He was very generous with both his time and resources serving on various boards and supporting Catholic education.

He enjoyed tramping through the woods, hunting and fishing but above all spending time with family and friends.

Bob was a loving husband, father to eleven, grandfather to thirty, and great-grandfather to twenty-two.

He is survived by his wife, Gerry of Spokane Valley, WA, daughters Susan (Jim) Scott, Spokane Valley, WA, Nancy Miller, Hamilton MT, Peggy (Tim) Smith, Spokane Valley, WA, Janet (David) Solberg, Liberty Lake, WA, and sons Bill (Meg) Malloy, Hayden ID, Greg (Tracie) Malloy, Otis Orchards, WA, Chris (Ann) Malloy, Spokane Valley, WA, Tim (Leslie) Malloy, Spokane Valley, WA, Jeff (Randi) Malloy, Spirit Lake, ID, and Dave (Vikki) Malloy, Spirit Lake, ID.

He was the second of six children; he is survived by his brothers, Leonard Malloy, Larry Malloy and Jim Malloy and sister Julijeanne Malloy.

He is predeceased by his parents William and Mabel Malloy and his brother Ernie Malloy.

The family would like to thank all his doctors, nurses and caretakers for their exceptional care and support.

A Rosary will be held Thursday, August 28, 2014 at 7:00 PM at St. Mary’s Catholic Church, 304 S. Adams Rd., Spokane Valley, WA 99216.

The funeral Mass will be held Friday, August 29, 2014 at 10:00am at St. Mary’s Catholic Church.
