In Case of Emergency…

Jim Gorzelany CTW Features
Winter driving can indeed be perilous. Accordingly, the AAA in Orlando, Fla. says motorists braving the elements should pack an “emergency kit” and keep it in the trunk as a precautionary measure in case they’re stranded on a closed road, stuck in the snow or skid off slick pavement. At the least a winter survival kit should include: • Jumper cables. • First-aid kit. • Basic tool kit, with screwdrivers, pliers and an adjustable wrench. • Bag of abrasive material (this can be sand, salt or cat litter) or traction mats. • Tow rope. • Snow shovel. • Flashlight with extra batteries. • Window washer solvent. • Ice scraper and brush. • Cloths or paper towels. • Blankets. • Additional cold-weather clothing, including gloves, hats and scarves. • Warning devices like flares, lights or triangles. • Drinking water and cups. • Healthy snacks, like raisins, nuts, dehydrated fruit and jerky, and food for animal passengers.
