Mt. Spokane opens GSL wrestling with win over State 3A champ NC

The North Central and Mt. Spokane wrestling teams proved Wednesday night just how tough this Greater Spokane League season is going to be.

Mt. Spokane’s Jacob Sander used an escape to defeat Jacob Koczar 2-0 in overtime at 200 pounds, and the Mt. Spokane Wildcats defeated the defending State 3A champion North Central Indians 40-29 in the league opener.

State-placers Alec Hoover and Rich Bondurant both won their matches for Mt. Spokane.

Reigning 3A state champions, and brothers, Clai and Izaec Quintanilla started the new season just how they ended last season, with victories, for North Central.

Mead 56, Lewis and Clark 18: Beau Fickle pinned 2014 State 4A participant Kaden Templeton in 4:55 and the host Panthers won 11 of 14 matches to defeat the Tigers.

Mead finished eighth and Lewis and Clark placed 10th among 4A teams at last year’s Mat Classic XXVI.

Central Valley 53, Shadle Park 10: Christian Hill defeated Travis Hays 6-4 at 120, leading the Bears past the visiting Highlanders. Shadle’s Bryden Uyehara scored a 6-4 overtime win over Braedon Orrino at 152.

University 50, Rogers 30: Tate Orndorff pinned Preston Ohmann in 2:41 at 285 pounds and the Titans defeated the Pirates. Rogers was led by Eddie Marx’s pin at 132 pounds.

Ferris 63, Gonzaga Prep 15: Ferris took 11 of 14 matches, including four by pin, as the host Saxons defeated the Bullpups.

Coeur d’Alene Charter 49, Mullan 23: Anna Verhaeghe finished with 13 points and 10 rebounds, and Jacklyn Jensen totaled eight points, 14 rebounds, four blocks and three assists to help the host Panthers (3-1) defeat the Tigers.

Reigan Kampmann won the all-around and balance beam, leading Mt. Spokane to the meet victory with a score of 157.125 points at Shadle Park. The Wildcats’ Jade Anderson added a win in the uneven bars. Shadle’s Alexiz Samuel took first in the vault, as the Highlanders finished second with 124.175 points. Lewis and Clark (119.4) and Ferris (113.2) were also participants in the season opener.
