Candles can be a danger if not properly tended

SPOKANE –The Spokane Fire Department is reminding the public that candles can pose a serious household hazard if not burned with care.

Candles cause an average of 115 deaths in the U.S. each year and 903 injuries. More than $400 million in property damage can be blamed on candle fires.

The fire department encourages use of battery candles.

Open flame candles must be 12 inches from anything flammable. Never leave a candle burning without adult supervision. Make sure candles are in sturdy containers. Never light candles while you are drowsy.

The period from Christmas to New Year’s Day brings an increase in candle-related fires, fire officials said.

Christmas trees can be put at curb for trash pickup

SPOKANE – When it’s time to take down the Christmas tree, Spokane residents can put it out on garbage day for free pickup.

The city will pick up fresh-cut trees up to 6 feet tall (taller trees should be cut in half). The trees will be chipped and composted. Flocked or artificial trees will not be accepted.

Trees should be placed at least 3 feet away from the refuse cart. The service will run Dec. 29 through Jan. 16.

City and county residents can also bring trees to the Waste-to-Energy Facility, 2900 S. Geiger Blvd.; Spokane Valley Transfer Station, 3941 N. Sullivan Road; or North County Transfer Station, 22123 Elk-Chattaroy Road. There is a fee for clean green disposal at these facilities.

And a reminder: There’s no trash or recycling service today or Jan. 1. Pick up will be a day late following the holidays.
