Obituary: Nevin, Norman Roderick “Rod”
Age 91
Rod was born May 5, 1923 in Wallace, Idaho to Norman M. Nevin and Viola May (Lantzy) Nevin.
He lived in Wallace for the first seven years of his life until his father got a job in Portland, Oregon as a mechanic; Rod was 10 years old.
His father worked for Gardner Denver Co.
They moved to Lima, Peru where his parents lived for 20 years.
At the age of 14, Rod was sent to the New Mexico Military School, where he graduated.
At the age of 17, he moved to California, where he worked for about a year.
World War II had begun and Rod joined the Army.
Rod spent time in Iwo Jima, Australia, New Guinea, China and Japan.
He was discharged from the Army in 1945.
Rod attended the University of Idaho for two years.
In 1948, he married Margaret Sampson on August 21.
Rod and Margaret have seven children and were married for 65 years.
Rod worked for the Davenport School District for 30 years as the maintenance man and custodian.
His big love was fishing and most people knew him as the man who knew where to and how to fish for whatever kind of fish there are.
When Rod was in Lima, Peru, he became childhood friends with Conchita Cintron, who became the most famous lady bull fighter in the world.
He found her again in 1989, living in Portugal.
She had married a Duke and had six children.
They corresponded for many years until she died in February 2010.
Rod’s cousin, David Nevin, was the author of the novel “Dream West”.
Rod leaves his wife Margaret of Spokane; three sons, Ray (Shirly) Nevin of Kettle Falls, WA, Jay (Laura) Nevin of Kalama, WA, and Jeff (Elaine) Nevin of Davenport, WA.
He has four daughters, Kathy Seaberg of Spokane, WA, Linda (Joe) Graves of Kettle Falls, WA Chris (Dick) Denson of Spokane, WA, and Cindy (Jon) Taylor of Olympia, WA.
He also has 16 grandchildren and 18 great-grandchildren.
He is preceeded in death by his parents, his sister Lila, and his nephew Mike.
Rod was a very good father and a good provider.
He was a very friendly man and everyone liked and respected him.
He will be missed.
