Obituary: Russell, Wallace Ewing “Wally”

Age 86

RUSSELL, Wallace Ewing “Wally” (Age 86) Of Spokane, WA, passed away, Sunday, June 1, 2014, with his wife and best friend, Martha “Marty” by his side.

Born in Prairie, Missouri on November 23, 1927, to William Jessie Russell and Velma Russell, Wally served twice in the United States Navy.

He earned his bachelor’s degree at Whitworth College, a master’s degree in education from Eastern Washington University, and a master’s degree in history from Kansas University.

As well as serving as a lay minister for many years, Wally taught for 15 years at North Central High School, for 16 years at Spokane Community College, and for 10 years in the GED program at SCC.

Some of his greatest pleasures after retirement were owning and operating a second-hand store, gardening, square and round dancing, horseback riding, reading, and volunteering in a variety of mentoring programs.

In addition to his wife of 42 years, Martha Marty Farmer, Wally is survived by siblings, William Russell (Leona), Paula DeFillipo (Joe), and Martin Russell; his children, Linda Young (Harlow), Steven Russell (Kathy), Jan Sumner, Paula Rothenbuhler (Jim), Gail Cerna (Gonsalo Jr.), Marcia Powell (Bob), Greg Munyon, Larry Munyon (April), and Debbie Munyon; and his 21 grandchildren, 24 great-grandchildren, and two great-great-grandchildren.

A celebration of his life was held by his immediate family on June 7, 2014.
