Affordable Three-Wheel Car Coming

Elio
Jim Gorzelany CTW Features
It’s not quite a full-blown automobile - at least not as we know it - and not quite a motorcycle. A new single-passenger, fully enclosed vehicle from startup manufacturer Elio Motors in Troy Mich., is being planned for introduction sometime in 2015, and it promises fuel economy of up to 84 miles per gallon and a sticker price starting at just $6,800. “Our high-mileage, low-cost vehicle is causing people to rethink how we approach transportation in the United States,” says company founder Paul Elio. “For those trips where you drive solo - and that’s probably the majority of trips - why not have a vehicle that is affordable and highly fuel efficient?” While it accommodates only a driver, the three-wheeled car will include amenities like multiple airbags, power windows and air conditioning. The company says it already has taken more than 15,000 reservations for the new model, which will be sold from a yet to be established network and serviced via Pep Boys car care locations nationwide.
