Landers wrong about pike
Rich Landers should be a politician given the way he spins the pike suppression on the Pend Oreille (“Pike suppression preserves sport fishing on Pend Oreille,” June 26).
Fish biologist Marc Divens downplays the impact that gill nets have on bass by guesstimating how many bass would have been eaten by pike. What he fails to tell you is that the fish and game found that pike mainly ingested whitefish and perch.
He admitted lower bass numbers. This admittance along with failed attempts by excellent fishermen to catch pike with any regularity certainly doesn’t convince me that there is any preservation of sport fishing going on at Box Canyon; certainly not enough for me to purchase a Washington license, drive 70 miles, and eat out at Usk just to catch a few bass.
