Area roundup: Gonzaga puts end to slide with baseball win over CSU Bakersfield
Mitchell Gunsolus doubled home the go-ahead run in the top of the seventh inning to lift the Gonzaga Bulldogs (4-12) to a 4-3 nonconference victory over the Cal State Bakersfield Roadrunners (6-9) on Wednesday in Bakersfield, Calif.
The win snapped a four-game losing streak for Gonzaga.
Reliever Sean-Luke Brija (1-0) notched the victory for the Bulldogs, getting out of a runners-at-the-corners, no-outs jam in the bottom of the seventh.
• Central Washington (8-9) took advantage of 10 walks and six errors to cruise to a 15-5 nonconference win over the Whitworth Pirates (5-7) in Ellensburg, Wash.
Golf
Washington State and Gonzaga tied for sixth place and Idaho finished 12th in the 15-team Thompson Invitational at Kaneohe Klipper Golf Course in Kaneoha Bay, Hawaii.
WSU’s Mallory Kent and GU’s Han Wu finished in a six-way tie for 10th with a 5-over-par 149.
Mississippi State won the team title by nine strokes over runner-up North Carolina State. UTEP’s Camino Sardinero was the medalist at 3-under 141.
• The Links Golf Club in Post Falls opens Friday and welcomes new pro Darrell Hull, who replaces retired pro Patti Marquis.
Volleyball
Shadle Park’s Brooke Meyer and Colfax’s Sue Doering are among the coaches for the 29th annual Washington State Volleyball Coaches Association’s All-State Volleyball Series, set for Saturday at Columbia Junior High School in Fife.
Meyer will help coach the 4A/3A team of selected seniors, including her Highlanders players Chloe Brooks and Amanda Konynenbelt. Mead’s Brianna Evans is also on the team.
Doering and Mead graduate Suzanne Marble of La Conner are among the coaches for the 2B/1B team.
Match times are 4 p.m. for 2B/1B, 6 for 2A/1A and 8 for 4A/3A.
