Photo: A 1942 desert warfare special

Motorcycles on display: Clayton Howard, of Mead, a member of the Northwest Classic Motorcycle Club, relocates his 1942 Harley-Davidson XA to a new display position in the main entrance of the Spokane County Fair and Expo Center on Thursday at the 11th annual Inland Northwest Motorcycle Show and Sale. Only 1,000 of these motorcycles were built for the U.S. Army, and Howard owns four of them. They were intended for desert warfare, but the Jeep became the Army’s general purpose vehicle and no more XAs were ordered. This bike once was owned by Howard’s father. The show opens today at 3 p.m. and runs through 4 p.m. on Sunday and features more than 400 motorcycles. (Dan Pelle)
