Which ‘Eco’ Trucks Deliver the Goods?

Jim Gorzelany CTW Features
One might not otherwise think of a full-size truck as being an environmentally friendly vehicle choice, but automakers are now touting their models “greener” sides in specific “eco” versions that deliver the top fuel economy ratings in their respective lines. The Automotive Science Group in Santa Rosa, Calif., recently determined the Ford F-150 full-size pickup - specifically its XL Regular Cab and Crew Cab models with the optional 3.7-liter “EcoBoost” turbocharged V6 engine - to be the most ecologically minded truck for 2014, based on a complex assessment of each truck line’s environmental, economic and social performance measures. The Chevrolet Silverado 1500 WT version with the 4.3-liter “EcoTec3” V6 engine took best all-around performance in the extended cab category, while the compact Toyota Tacoma Access Cab pickup with the 2.7-liter four-cylinder engine that’s responsible for 23-mpg in combined city/highway driving was determined to have the smallest overall life-cycle carbon footprint among all 2014 trucks.
