Obituary: Zeimantz, Dorothy
Age 93
She was born in Davenport, WA on February 2, 1921, to Anna and Frank Zeimantz.
Dorothy remembered the Depression years vividly as her older sister, Helen and the family moved often during these years to find work.
Dorothy’s dad, Frank Zeimantz, lived on the family farm near Davenport, homesteaded by his father, Theodore Zeimantz.
Frank lost the farm during the depression years, so he moved the family to Hooper where Dorothy started school.
Later they moved to Redmond, Issaquah, and on to Wenatchee, looking for work.
Soon after they moved to Spokane where Dorothy attended Finch Elementary School and then St. Anthony’s Catholic School.
Eventually, her dad and the family moved back to Mondovi, Bluestem and finally full circle, back to the original homestead where her great-nephew, Todd Anderson, now lives.
Dorothy and Helen attended high school in Davenport, and Dorothy graduated in 1939.
Dorothy attended college at Cheney Normal (now EWU) and two and a half years later (1941) got her first teaching job in Hartline.
She later moved on to the original town of Peteros (now underwater as Coulee Dam had not yet been built).
Soon after, Dorothy moved on Seattle and taught at Highline for one year.
She then returned to Spokane for two years, working at the Nash car dealership and other odd jobs.
In 1947 she moved to Olympia and taught for four years, then on to Shoreline School District in Seattle in 1951.
She went to Holland in 1955 and taught on the Air Force Base.
She taught for one year and then returned to Shoreline.
She went to school in England in 1970 and 1971, and studied Montessori.
Dorothy finally finished her 30 year teaching career in Shoreline and retired in 1976.
She lived in Seattle for nearly ten more years and then moved back to Spokane to care for her ailing sister, Helen, and her mother Anna Zeimantz.
Dorothy is preceded in death by her mother and father; her sister, Helen Anderson; and Joe Anderson Sr. (brother-in-law); Joe Anderson Jr. (nephew); and Roderick Anderson (nephew).
Dorothy is survived by her nephews, Lyle Anderson, Frank Anderson (wife Mary), Luke Anderson (wife Connie); and her niece, Chris (Anderson) Huffman (husband Wayne Huffman).
She is also survived by great, great-great, and great-great-great, nieces and nephews.
A Funeral Mass will be celebrated at St. Anthony’s in Spokane at 10:00 A.M. on December 6, 2014.
