Spokane Valley

By Pia Hallenberg

Nov. 14 – You may remember Shelly Clark as one of the organizers behind the protest that led to Spokane Valley outlawing topless barristas about a year ago. Thursday night, Clark and the Coalition for Community Values called a meeting at CenterPlace to discuss the impact the legalization of marijuana may have on Valley children.

About 30 people showed up, including some marijuana growers and sellers, Mayor Dean Grafos and other City Council members. Linda Thompson, CEO of the Greater Spokane Substance Abuse Council, presented drug statistics showing that many high school students believe it’s much less dangerous to smoke pot than it is to smoke tobacco.

The Slice

Nov. 14 – Couldn’t help but scoff upon seeing a reference to “Picture retake day” on a reader board outside an elementary school.

In my day, there were no retakes. When it came to school pictures, you got one chance and that was it.

If you made a goofy face during the photo session, there was no turning back.

Maybe it is for student ID cards. Or something.

But I don’t like to miss a chance to trot out my grumpy old man act.

Spin Control

Nov. 12 – A few people have called or emailed to accuse the newspaper of making up quasquicentennial as a word to mean 125-year anniversary in this morning’s story about Washington’s birthday celebration.

To which we would say, truthfully, we’re not that smart.

It’s a real word, if somewhat limited in use. You could look that up in your Funk & Wagnalls, as they used to say on “Laugh-In.” Which would be a good place to start because Dr. Wilfred Funk did make up the word back in 1961 when someone wrote to ask what would be the proper term to call the town’s 125th anniversary.
