Died Former NHL player, coach and executive Pat Quinn has died at age 71. The Western Hockey League’s Vancouver Giants said Quinn, also a co-owner of the team, died Sunday night in Vancouver after a long illness. Quinn played parts of nine seasons in the NHL and went on to enjoy a long coaching career.

• Ray Sadecki , who pitched in the major leagues for 18 seasons and won 20 games for the 1964 World Series champion St. Louis Cardinals, has died from complications of blood cancer, his son, Steve, said. Sadecki was 73.

Viktor Tikhonov, the Soviet hockey coach whose teams won three Olympic gold medals but fell to the United States in the “Miracle on Ice,” died after a long illness. He was 84. Russia’s Kontinental Hockey League said early that Tikhonov died during the night. He had been receiving treatment at home for an undisclosed illness that had left him unable to walk in recent weeks.

Larry Kelm, a linebacker on Texas A&M’s Wrecking Crew defense who went on to play in the NFL, has died. He was 49. The university said he died this weekend in an accident while hunting. Kelm played for the Aggies from 1983-86.

Resigned Montana volleyball coach Jerry Wagner has resigned after nine seasons after the Grizzlies posted 6-23 records in two of the last three seasons. University officials said a national search for Wagner’s replacement will begin next month.

Terminated Virginia Military Institute’s Sparky Woods is out as the football coach after seven seasons. VMI athletic director Dave Diles made the announcement, saying Woods’ contract would not be extended. His seven-year stay equals the third-longest in Keydets’ football history.
