Obituary: Avnet, Libby

Age 101

AVNET, Libby (Age 101) February 7, 1913 - November 17, 2014 Libby was born in Brooklyn, New York to immigrant parents from Belarus.

At the age of four, Libby’s mother passed away.

She and her six brothers and sisters were raised by Libby’s father and grandmother.

After completing school, Libby worked as a proofreader.

Her close childhood friend had a brother who began writing to her after he moved to Alaska.

Libby and Hilliard were married in 1944.

In 1956, the family, including two small children moved to Spokane.

Libby went to work at KHQ while Hilliard built their new home.

When Hilliard died in 1960, Libby began a new career at Washington Water Power.

She retired in 1977 and began fulfilling her dreams of traveling and going back to school.

Libby traveled extensively throughout Europe, the Far East and Israel.

Libby finished her education by graduating cum laude.

She received an honorable mention in the 1981 edition of Who’s Who of American Colleges and Universities.

After her graduation, Libby embarked on a new career as a volunteer at Sacred Heart Hospital, where she served for 17 years in Pediatrics and the Cardiac Unit.

Libby loved life and she loved people.

More than anything else, Libby’s greatest joy in life was being with family, friends, neighbors and frequent guests and visitors to her home.

She loved swimming, taking long walks and gardening.

Libby was a long-time member of Temple Beth Shalom and enjoyed participating in Temple activities.

Libby was very blessed by having so many wonderful, loving caring friends over so many years in the Spokane Jewish Community.

Libby is survived by her daughter Barbara of California and her son Philip; two grandsons; a granddaughter; one great-granddaughter; numerous nieces and nephews.

She was the last survivor of her six siblings.

A graveside service was held at Herzl Cemetery in Seattle, where Libby was laid to rest next to her husband Hilliard.

A Memorial Service will be held at Heritage Chapel on Friday, November 28, 2014 at 11:00AM.
