Obituary: Barnes, Orville Lee
He passed away August 24, 2014.
Graduating from Caldwell H.S.
in 1945 he was a star football and basketball player.
He was named All-Conference and All-State in both sports.
Following high school, Orv served in the Navy in the South Pacific from 1945-1946.
Barnes then entered the University of Idaho on a full athletic scholarship.
While a Vandal, Orv was ranked 12th in the nation as a pass receiver.
He was named to the all-scholastic team in 1949.
Orv was a member of Phi Delta Theta fraternity and while in college met Marjorie (Marge) Johnson.
They were married September 12, 1948 in Pocatello, Idaho and celebrated 66 years together.
Mr. Barnes was drafted by the Green Bay Packers but never played.
He was inducted to the Idaho Hall of Fame on March 21, 1981.
All of his life he was a huge Vandal booster.
Following graduation from Idaho he joined the Randall-Emry Accounting firm and passed the CPA exam in 1951.
Orville became a partner there in 1954.
He joined E.D.
McCarthy Mgmt.
and associates as comptroller and assistant to the president in 1956.
In 1966, he became managing director for the company and was later elected president and served in that position until 1979.
He purchased the corporation upon the death of E.D.
McCarthy and formed a new corporation of McCarthy Mgmt.
& Development, managing shopping centers throughout the Northwest.
He also served as President of the International Shopping Centers Association.
Barnes was on the board of Pee Wee Baseball League in Spokane and was instrumental in starting the Junior Football League here.
He was elected to the Spokane School Board for a 6 year term and also served a 6 year term on the Washington State Board of Education.
Orv was President of the Spokane Taxpayers Association for 8 years.
He was elected to the Spokane City Council in 1991 and also served as Mayor Pro-term serving on the council for two terms.
His other accomplishments and hobbies included: Member of Rotary International for over 30 years; Member of Manito Golf and Country Club for over 50 years; elected to the Spokane Airport Board in 1996; and he was a lifetime member and officer of Plymouth Congregational Church.
His family was his passion.
He is survived by his wife of 66 years, Marjorie (Marge); son and daughter-in-law Ron and Vicki Barnes, Spokane; granddaughter and spouse Emily and Victor Orellana and their girls Hailey Jane (3) and Hannah Marie (3), Spokane; grandson and spouse Nicholas and Natalie Barnes, and their girls Analisa Mae (7) and Paige Nicole (4), Spokane; daughter and son-in-law Sheri and Doug McEachran, Spokane; grandchildren Jamieson McEachran, Honolulu, Hawaii and Annette McEachran and son Louis Hedspeth, Spokane; brother and sister-in-law Charles and Veronika Barnes, Deming, New Mexico; and two nephews Bill and Bob and a niece Nancy.
He was preceded in death by his parents Charles and Ruth (Mozingo) Barnes; brother Raymond (Ray) and his sister Valiera (Val).
A memorial service will be held at Plymouth Congregational Church on Wednesday, September 3, 2014 at 4pm.
