Chelsey Bettinson has career-high kills to lead Cougars past Notre Dame
After opening with a sweep of IUPUI, the Washington State volleyball team knocked off Notre Dame 3-1 at the Golden Dome Invitational Friday in South Bend, Indiana.
Scores were 23-25, 25-14, 25-21 and 27-25.
WSU (4-1) senior Chelsey Bettinson had a career-high 22 kills and Kyra Holt added 17 kills and 11 digs.
WSU’s Jaicee Harris chipped in eight kills and 12 digs, and Haley McDonald dished out 48 assists. Notre Dame fell to 0-3.
The Cougars blanked IUPUI (1-5) 25-21, 25-19, 25-13.
• Savannah Blinn and Jordan Glasser combined for 25 kills and Gonzaga (3-1) beat Grand Canyon (3-1) 25-15, 23-25, 25-8 and 25-16 at the Gonzaga Invitational in Spokane.
GU opens play this morning at 10 against Canisius.
• Eastern Washington (4-2) regrouped after dropping the first two sets and beat High Point (2-2) in a nonconference match in High Point, North Carolina. Scores were 24-26, 21-25, 25-20, 25-18 and 15-11.
EWU’s Kelsey Julian and Allie Schumacher had 14 kills apiece and Ana Jakovljevic added eight kills, seven digs and a pair of aces.
• Whitworth (5-2) extended its winning streak to five with wins over Lewis & Clark and Whittier at the Whit Classic in Walla Walla.
The Pirates swept Lewis & Clark before a 3-1 win over Whittier.
• Idaho (1-5) fell to UC Irvine and Utah State (2-3) at the UC Irvine Tournament in Irvine, California. The Vandals lost both matches 3-1.
• Community Colleges of Spokane (5-3) beat Big Bend before falling to Chemeketa at the Spokane Invitational at Spokane Falls Community College.
• North Idaho went 1-1 at the Southern Idaho Tournament in Twin Falls, Idaho.
The Cardinals opened with a 3-1 loss to Casper before sweeping Northwestern.
Men’s soccer
Marquette scored twice in the first half and shut out Gonzaga 2-0 in a nonconference match in Milwaukee.
Alex McBride and Daniel Szczepanek scored goals for Marquette (1-2). GU fell to 0-2.
Women’s soccer
A Gonzaga player headed a ball into the Bulldogs’ goal in the 89th minute, and Cal State Northridge (1-2-1) snuck away with a 1-0 nonconference win in Northridge, Calif.
The Bulldogs fell to 3-2.
• Washington State (2-0-2) and No. 11 Pepperdine (4-0-1) played to a scoreless draw at the Outrigger Resorts Soccer Classic in Waipahu, Hawaii.
• Seattle (3-2) scored three unanswered goals in the second half and beat Eastern Washington (2-2) 4-1 in a nonconference game in Seattle.
Paige Gallaway scored the Eagles’ lone goal in the 22nd minute. It was her third of the season.
• In its first meeting with Idaho since 2009, Boise State got two early goals and blanked the Vandals 2-0 in a game in Moscow, Idaho.
• Whitworth scored two first-half goals and blanked Southwestern (0-4) 2-0 in a match in Georgetown, Texas.
Tiara Pajimola got the Pirates (2-1-1) on the board early with an unassisted goal in the ninth minute. Leah Corra capped the scoring in the 39th minute with her first career goal.
• Alex Rankin scored off an assist from Jaimee Hulst in the 16th minute and North Idaho (2-0-1, 1-0-1) went on to shut out Clackamas (1-2, 0-1) 2-0 in a Northwest Athletic Conference game in Oregon City, Oregon.
