BYU pounds depleted Texas

BYU quarterback Taysom Hill ran for three touchdowns in the third quarter, hurdling a defender near the goal line on a 30-yard score, leading the Cougars to a 41-7 win over Texas on Saturday night in Austin, Texas.

BYU rolled up 550 yards rushing in a win over Texas in 2013. This time, the Cougars stuffed a Longhorns offense that started new quarterback Tyrone Swoopes behind a line missing three starters because of injury or suspensions.

The Cougars (2-0) allowed Texas (1-1) just 249 total yards.

Hill passed for 181 yards.

Miami 41, Florida A&M 7: Phillip Dorsett caught two touchdown passes, Duke Johnson eclipsed the 2,000-yard career rushing mark and the Hurricanes topped the Rattlers in Miami Gardens, Florida.

Boise State 37, Colorado State 24: Jay Ajayi scored three touchdowns and amassed 280 yards of total offense to lead the Broncos past the Rams in Boise in the Mountain West Conference opener for both teams.

Puget Sound 13, Claremont-Mudd-Scripps 10: In a season-opener marred by turnovers, it was a 32-yard field goal by Sawyer Petre with less than 3 minutes left that gave the Loggers (1-0) a win over the Stags (0-1) in Tacoma.

Both offenses struggled throughout. Claremont quarterback Trey Reynolds threw four interceptions and Puget Sound quarterbacks Hans Fortune and Braden Foley combined for three.

Puget Sound plays at Occidental next Saturday.

Southern Oregon 38, Carroll 35: Victor Dean’s 22-yard touchdown reception from Austin Dodge late in the third quarter was the difference in the Raiders’ (2-0) win over the Fighting Saints (0-1).

Neither team scored in the fourth quarter.

Southern Oregon’s Melvin Mason carried the load. He ran for 202 yards on 27 carries and scored three touchdowns.
