Obituary: Shadduck, Bruce Marvin

Age 72

SHADDUCK, Bruce Marvin (Age 71) Died September 8, 2014, at home in Coeur d’Alene, Idaho, with family at his side.

He was born September 22, 1942, in Coeur d’Alene to Ragna (Ringstad) and Marvin Shadduck.

They raised him in Ritzeville, WA, and Dishman, WA.

Bruce attended Dishman Grade School, graduated from West Valley High School in 1960, and served with the Washington National Guard while obtaining a science degree from Eastern Washington College (now EWU).

Bruce’s 34-plus-year teaching career concentrated on earth and geographical sciences, health sciences and mathematics at the junior high and high school levels.

He taught at Lewis and Clark High School in Spokane, then further northwest at Okanogan High School, and the latter 30 years near Seattle at Leota Jr. High School in Woodinville, WA., where he headed the science department numerous years.

He also coached school students in downhill skiing, track and football.

Bruce was an individual of great integrity and work ethic.

He advocated for adequate pay for public school teachers and championed curriculum reform.

Bruce enjoyed seven decades worth of summers at Hayden Lake in North Idaho; camping and hiking in national parks; running in several Bloomsdays; and continual learning about the earth and its animal and insect inhabitants.

Bruce was a founding member of Canfield Mountain Preservation and later Canfield Mountain Alliance, a vital force in keeping developers off of Canfield Mountain in Coeur d’Alene.

He also supported Defenders of Wildlife, Animal Advocates of the Inland Northwest, River’s Wish Animal Sanctuary, Pacific Northwest Animal Welfare Project, Lavender Dreams Farm and Donkey Rescue, and Kootenai Environmental Alliance.

Bruce was preceded in death by his parents; grandparents Mary (Hanson) and Gustov Ringstad, and Mary (Furgason) and Lester Carson Shadduck; cousins Clarence Bradley, Denny Shadduck, and Dustin Taylor; and numerous uncles and aunts.

Bruce is survived by his daughters Kinda Keane, Richland, WA., and Kiantha Shadduck, Coeur d’Alene; granddaughter and grandson-in-law Tasia and Jordan McMahan, Pasco, WA.

; great-grandsons Brock McMahan and Tobias McMahan, Pasco, WA.

; loyal kitty Buddy; and numerous cousins and extended family.

A memorial service is at 2 p.m. Saturday, September 20, 2014, at Trinity Lutheran Church in Coeur d’Alene.
