In brief: HUB Sports Center hosts HUB-Apalooza
SPOKANE VALLEY – The HUB Sports Center, 19619 E. Cataldo Ave., will present its annual family fun festival, HUB-Apalooza on Saturday from 1 to 4 p.m.
All five basketball courts and the upstairs mezzanine and studios will have activities for kids and families such as basketball, volleyball, soccer, bubbleball, Pickleball, badminton, gymnastics, Zumba and martial arts.
At 4:30 p.m., there will be a screening of “Frozen.” Snacks and drinks will be available for purchase.
The event and movie are free to attend and open to all ages.

Foundation gives to crisis nursery
LINCOLN HEIGHTS – The Rite Aid Foundation has awarded $10,000 to the Vanessa Behan Crisis Nursery.
The funds were raised through its KidCents program which lets customers decide where to donate their rounded-up change from purchases.
Vanessa Behan received the check Sept. 16 at Rite Aid, 2929 E. 29th Ave.
Members of the store’s wellness+ program can designate which local charity their rounded up change can go to at kidcents.riteaid.com/.
Foster licenses subject of meeting
SPOKANE – Olive Crest, a nonprofit organization which recruits, trains and certifies foster families, will present a question-and-answer session Friday from 6 to 8 p.m. in its offices, 505 E. Wedgewood Ave.
Families interested in fostering children can learn about the licensing process.
Snacks will be provided. Registration is free, but seating is limited, so you must register.

Sign language offered at center
HILLYARD – The MOOSE Project, (Magic of Oral and Signing Education), will be offered at the Northeast Community Center, 4001 N. Cook St., beginning Wednesday from 6 to 7 p.m.
The course, a basic introduction to sign language, will last for six weeks. The cost is $40 per person.

Avista energy fair touts efficiency
HILLYARD – Avista will host its Energy Fair today from 3 to 6 p.m. at the Northeast Community Center, 4001 N. Cook.
The fair will include demonstrations of installing energy efficient materials such as rope caulk, window plastic and v-seal, complimentary food and beverages, door prizes, activities for kids, a chance to speak with Avista staff and learn about low-cost and no-cost energy efficiency tips and hear from Avista’s community partners who will share information about services and resources they provide to the community.

Path project closes tennis courts
LOGAN NEIGHBORHOOD – The south tennis courts at Mission Park will remain closed until 2015 while the city’s Parks and Recreation Department completes an upgrade.
The construction project will include demolition, regrading, new asphalt, fence replacement, irrigation and construction of a new accessible pathway.
Tennis courts on the north side of the park will remain open for the remainder of the season.
Renaissance Faire to host food drives
SPOKANE COUNTY – The Spokane Renaissance Faire will host two food drives to benefit Second Harvest Food Bank.
Both the Liberty Lake Safeway, 1233 N. Liberty Lake Road, and the Northpointe Safeway, 10100 N. Newport Highway, will present “Charge into Battle Against Hunger,” Friday at 5 p.m. The food drive will run through the faire which is Oct. 4 and 5 in Green Bluff.
Stop by with a donation of money or food and enter to win free passes to the Renaissance Faire and a diamond necklace from Tracy Jewelers. Anyone making a donation of $10 or more will receive a two-for-one pass to the faire.
Bring two cans of food to the faire and receive $1 off regular admission.

Libraries close Friday for training
SPOKANE COUNTY – All facilities in the Spokane County Library District will be closed Friday for an annual staff training day.
Regular library hours will resume Saturday and online services will be available during the closure.
Pet adoption fees waived for some
SPOKANE COUNTY – In conjunction with National Adopt-A-Less-Adoptable Pet Week, the Spokane Humane Society will waive adoption fees on all less-adoptable pets through Saturday at its facility, 6607 N. Havana St. and at the PetSmart adoption center, 9950 N. Newport Highway.
