In brief: Twins’ Phil Hughes forgoes bonus worth $500K
Baseball: Minnesota Twins right-hander Phil Hughes turned down a chance to pitch again this weekend, even though one more out would have earned him a $500,000 bonus.
Hughes’ half-million-dollar bonus kicks in if he reaches 210 innings this year, but he is set to finish with 209 2/3 after a rain delay forced him out of his final scheduled start Wednesday.
Manager Ron Gardenhire said the Twins were prepared to let Hughes pitch again, but Hughes says he didn’t feel it was right to make a token appearance just for that purpose.
• Marlins to offer Stanton contract: The Miami Marlins plan to make a multiyear contract offer to Giancarlo Stanton this offseason, despite his recent season-ending injury. Stanton suffered fractures in his face and other injuries when he was hit by a pitch Sept. 11.
“There’s no hesitancy, no reservation or doubt he’ll return and be even better,” president of baseball operations Michael Hill said Thursday before the Marlins’ home finale. Before his injury, Stanton led the N.L. with 37 homers.
• D-backs pick ex-major leaguer Dave Stewart as GM: The Arizona Diamondbacks have made 16-year major leaguer Dave Stewart the franchise’s vice president and general manager. In a restructuring of the front office under Chief Baseball Officer Tony La Russa, the team also named De Jon Watson senior vice president/baseball operations.
La Russa says he’s known Stewart for three decades and that his diverse background will be invaluable in the general manager position.
Stewart most recently served as a sports agent for Sports Management Partners, an agency he founded.
• Mo’ne Davis donates LLWS jersey to Hall of Fame: Mo’ne Davis, the pitching star for Philadelphia’s Taney Dragons, donated her jersey to the baseball Hall of Fame on Thursday after becoming the first girl to win Little League World Series games. Davis pitched a two-hit shutout at the LLWS last month.
Frank leaves Nets, joins Clippers
Basketball: Lawrence Frank’s second stint with Nets is over. A league source confirmed that the Nets have reached a buyout agreement with Frank, who was initially hired last summer to be Jason Kidd’s top assistant.
The agreement allows Frank to join Doc Rivers’ staff with the Los Angeles Clippers as he was officially hired as an assistant Thursday.
Frank also served on Rivers’ staff with the Boston Celtics in 2010-11.
• Cavaliers acquire Bogans from Celtics: The Cleveland Cavaliers acquired guard Keith Bogans and the rights to Sacramento’s 2015 and 2017 second-round picks from the Boston Celtics.
The Celtics got guard John Lucas III, forwards Erik Murphy, Dwight Powell and Malcolm Thomas and Cleveland’s 2016 and 2017 second-round picks.
The 6-foot-5 Bogans has averaged 6.3 points, 2.7 rebounds and 1.3 assists in 671 games in 10 seasons.
• Grizzlies sign free-agent forward Michael Beasley: The Memphis Grizzlies signed free-agent forward Michael Beasley.
Beasley, the 25-year-old No. 2 overall pick in the 2008 draft, averaged 7.9 points and 3.1 rebounds in 55 games last season with the Miami Heat.
He owns career averages of 13.2 points, 4.9 rebounds and 1.3 assists in 409 games with the Minnesota Timberwolves, Phoenix Suns and Heat.
• Hornets’ Taylor arrested for domestic assault: Charlotte Hornets third-year forward Jeffery Taylor has been arrested in Michigan on domestic assault charges.
The Hornets released a statement saying they are aware of the incident.
The East Lansing police department said in a release that the 25-year-old Taylor was charged with one count of domestic assault, one count of assault and one count of malicious destruction of property.
Datsyuk to miss beginning of season
Miscellany: Detroit Red Wings center Pavel Datsyuk is expected to miss 4-5 weeks, including the team’s NHL opener on Oct. 9 against Boston, because of a separated right shoulder.
Datsyuk, 36, was injured in the Red Wings’ exhibition opener at Pittsburgh on Monday night. The veteran missed 37 games in 2013-14, but still managed 17 goals and 37 points in 45 games.
• Team Penske extends contract with Logano: Team Penske has signed drive Joey Logano to a multiyear contract extension. The seven-year NASCAR veteran joined Team Penske at the start of the 2013 season and has four Sprint Cup wins this season.
Roger Penske says the 24-year-old Logano has been “everything we hoped he would be, both as a driver and as a representative of our organization.”
• Women get go-ahead to compete in four-man bobsled: Women can start competing in four-man bobsled this season.
FIBT, bobsled’s world governing body, says its executive committee decided to open the event to mixed gender teams. Previously, women competed only in two-athlete bobs and men competed in twos and fours.
Mixed teams can begin in World Cup events at a season-opening meet in December at Lake Placid, New York.
