Area roundup: Kevin Pangos wins 3-point contest

Gonzaga’s Kevin Pangos wowed the capacity crowd at Hinkle Fieldhouse on his way to victory in the 2015 State Farm College Slam Three-Point Championship on Thursday evening in Indianapolis.

 The Zags senior scored 23 points in each of the first two rounds and knocked down 22 in the final round against Butler’s Alex Barlow and UConn’s Ryan Boatright.

 His 23 in the first two rounds was the highest total achieved by any shooter in the competition.

College baseball

San Diego 9, Gonzaga 4: David Hill allowed two earned runs, striking out 10 in eight solid innings, allowing the Toreros (17-10, 9-1) to defeat the Bulldogs (13-16, 3-7) in a West Coast Conference game in Spokane.

Tyler Frost provided the one highlight for Gonzaga, hitting his second home run of the season, and driving in two in the loss.

Washington State 4, California 2: Cameron Frost hit a go-ahead, two-run home run in the top of the eighth inning, and the Cougars (13-15, 2-8) defeated the Bears (20-8, 7-3) in a Pac-12 game at Berkeley, California.

Washington 4, Stanford 2: Chris Baker extended his hitting streak to nine games, driving in two runs in the Huskies’ three-run third inning, and Washington (16-12, 3-7 Pac-12) defeated the Cardinal (11-15, 0-7) in the first game of a three-game series at Stanford, California.

CC Spokane 9, Big Bend 7: Michael Heaton drove in the go-ahead runs with a two-run double in the seventh inning, and Anthony Contonio was stellar in relief, allowing one hit and striking out eight in five innings, giving host Spokane (15-4, 4-2) an NWAC win over Big Bend (8-11, 1-5).

College softball

(20) Washington 11, Stanford 4: Kimberlee Souza batted 3 for 4 with a double, home run and six RBIs and the Huskies (32-9) defeated the Cardinal (16-20) in a Pac-12 contest in Seattle.

Courtney Gano, Krystal Aubert and Ali Aguilar all homered for the Huskies.
