Obituary: Fergen, Gary John

FERGEN, Gary John Gone Fishing!

(Age 66) Our beloved husband, father, brother, grandpapa and friend passed away April 14, 2015 peacefully surrounded by his family.

In 1948, Gary was born in Spokane to Bill and Josephine Fergen.

He attended schools in Spokane and graduated from Shadle Park High School in 1966.

After high school he enlisted in the Coast Guard Reserve.

He graduated from Eastern Washington University with a degree in Urban Planning and started his career in 1970 at Spokane County Planning Department.

Gary retired in 2001 from Pend Oreille County as the Director of the Planning Department.

Gary enjoyed fishing, hunting, and gardening, trips to the casino, poker, and pinochle games with friends, and was also an avid dog lover.

He married Vonnie Oxner in 1971 and they enjoyed 43 wonderful years together.

Their first son Paul was born in 1975 and Jonathan was born in 1980.

Gary enjoyed watching the boys in youth sports and teaching them to fish and hunt.

The family enjoyed spring break and summer vacations together to Disneyland, Canada, Alaska, Montana and the Coast.

Gary also enjoyed numerous trips into the Bob Marshal Wilderness Area with close friends.

Gary is survived by his wife Vonnie; son Jonathan (Jenny); daughter-in-law Dani (Mike); brother Lon; and grandchildren: Brayden, Sydney, Landen, Chase and Kyle.

He was preceded in death by this parents and his eldest son Paul.

Gary’s family would like to thank all the warm and caring people at Clare Bridge of Spokane for helping Gary and his family through his journey with Alzheimer’s.

In lieu of flowers, in memory of Gary, please make contributions to the Alzheimer’s Association, or the American Cancer Society, or the Juvenile Diabetes Association, or a charity of your choice.

Join the family in celebrating Gary’s life, Saturday, April 25, 2015, at 2:00 pm in the Ball & Dodd Funeral Home Chapel, 5100 W. Wellesley Ave., Spokane, WA.

Interment will follow at Fairmount Memorial Park.
