Education Notebook: Committee announces state school retirees awards

The Washington State School Retirees Association has announced the winners of its scholarship program for District E-7.

Heidi Wiebers, of Shadle Park High School, received the WSSRA Foundation Award of $1,400 for one year.

Maria Franchino, of Lewis and Clark High School, and Taylor Hansen, of Central Valley High School, both received the Robert J. Handy-PEMCO award of $900 per year for up to four years.

There will be a luncheon at Mukogawa Commons on May 19 to celebrate the recipients.

Seniors at any District E-7 high school are eligible to apply for these scholarships. The committee reviewed students’ statements on future teaching goals, resumes, activities and work experiences, recommendations and transcripts.

EV students nab state business awards

Four East Valley High School students recently claimed top spots at the state Future Business Leaders of America competition.

Joe Grassl is the state champion in the CyberSecurity division, and Laurel Weberg, Baylee Buchanan and Audrey Burgess are state champions in the American Enterprise Project division.

All four students qualified for the FBLA Nationals in Chicago in July. The students are coached by Bret Kiefer.

St. George’s School invites parents of eighth-, ninth- and 10th-graders to attend information sessions on its International Baccalaureate Diploma program.

In this program, juniors and seniors take IB courses instead of Advanced Placement classes, giving them the chance to earn college credit and, possibly, an IB diploma along with their high school diploma.

The first session is today from 6-7 p.m. at the NEWESD 101 Building, 4202 S. Regal St. The second session is Wednesday from 7-8 p.m. at the Washington Trust Bank Building, 717 W. Sprague Ave. Both sessions are free and will cover the same material.

Northwest Christian Homeschool Program students will present An Evening of the Arts on Monday.

Each high school literature student has prepared a research and composition course oral presentation, while junior high school history students have prepared a research presentation.

There will also be a gallery of elementary art and projects, secondary school artwork, a science demonstration and a multi-class performance.

An Evening of the Arts will begin at 5:30 p.m. at the school, 5104 E. Bernhill Road, Colbert.
