‘Sound of Music’ onstage at Oaks

The Oaks Classical Christian Academy’s production of “The Sound of Music,” which follows the story of Maria and the von Trapp Family, premieres tonight.

The musical stars Natalya Ferch as Maria, Timothy Fisher as Captain von Trapp, Rachel Yates as Mother Abbess, Hannah Siglin as Elsa Schraeder, Haeden Coffey as Max, Christa LaVoie as Liesl and Jordan Strandness as Rolf Gruber.

Performances are 7 p.m. today and Friday and 2 and 7 p.m. Saturday at Mt. Spokane High School, 6015 E. Mt. Spokane Park Drive. Tickets are $12 for adults, $10 for students and $35 for a family pass for the matinee performance.

Future Business Leaders of America students in the Cheney and Freeman School Districts recently competed in the Washington State Business Leader conference.

Fifty-three students from Cheney High School attended the event, with 21 placing in the top five. Students who placed first, second or third are automatically eligible to compete at the national conference, which will be June 29-July 2 in Chicago.

Placing first were: Joe Riddle (database design), Jackson Spencer (impromptu speaking), Kendra Kendall and Leanna Eik (life smarts), Mitch Lawrence (Microsoft Office specialist Word), Jackson Spencer (sales presentation).

Placing second were: Mac Frederick (database design), Breanna Stewart and Sydney Zapf (digital design and promotion), Kendra Kendall, Chayce Moore and Andrew Jenkins (management information systems), Joe Riddle (networking concepts), Hannah Blazon, Kaetlyn Blazon and Connor Gerstenkorn (public service announcement), Kendra Kendall (spreadsheet applications).

Placing third were: Jennifer Harbick (3D animation, introduction to business communication), Claire Arensmeyer and Bradlee Powell (partnership with business), Jackson Spencer (public speaking II).

Placing fourth were: Hannah Blazon and Connor Gerstenkorn (3D animation), Kendra Kendall (computer applications), Hannah Blazon (database design), Lyndsay Sweitzer (electronic career portfolio).

Placing fifth were: Ian Case, Lyndsay Sweitzer and Keith Emert (management information systems), Caleb Williamson (networking concepts), Anna Arensmeyer (public speaking I), Lyndsay Sweitzer (website design).

Cheney and Westwood middle school students also participated in the state conference. Seventeen students represented Cheney, while two students represented Westwood.

Madison Conley (eBusiness), Abigael Dotson (eBusiness) and Paige King (help desk) all placed third in their respective categories and have qualified for nationals.

Twenty-one Freeman High School students also competed. Bethany Williams placed first in who’s who in FBLA and fourth in future business leader; Moriah Longhurst placed third in business communication; Erick Flack placed fourth in introduction to information technology; and Kaylee Fuchs placed fifth in sales presentation.

Flack, Longhurst and Williams qualified for the national conference. Fuchs is an alternate for the conference.

The other competing Freeman students were Brayden Aller, Addy Clark, Ben Mitchell, Jami Pratt, Shenoa Rush, Tristan Albrecht, Nicholas Franz, Heidi Hohmann, Alma Longhurst, Ali Tesch, Bobby Landoe, Desi Thosath, Bradley Williams, Odie Landoe, Nathan Longhurst, Shilo Stuart and Tyler Waite.
