Obituary: Rehfeld, Shauna Lynn
Age 44
Shauna was born in Brewster, WA to Sharon Schutter Park and Kenneth Schutter on March 5, 1971, joining her older sister, Tawni.
As a child, Shauna demonstrated her love and caring for animals, wanting to approach any animal she saw.
She was quiet and shy but opened up to her family and friends as she grew.
Standing six feet tall, Shauna participated and did well in a variety of sports throughout her school years and into adulthood.
She was also an extremely strong swimmer working her way through the Red Cross accredited swimming lessons.
She became one of the managers of the Brewster Swimming Pool the summer of 1989 before entering college.
She was scholastically a very good student at Brewster elementary and high school.
Shauna went on to continue her education at Western Washington University, earning her Bachelor Degree in Education.
She then moved to Bothell, WA and completed her student teaching and substituted at Kirkland, in the Lake WA School District before moving to Spokane.
She continued to substitute until she and a teacher friend had the opportunity to experience another culture by traveling to the Marshall Islands to teach underprivileged children through the 1995-96 school year.
She returned from her experience with an enhanced perspective of the impact a teacher makes in the lives of their students and with an even stronger desire to be able to make a positive change in the life of a child.
She spent the next two years attending Eastern Washington University, achieving her Masters Degree in Teaching while working at a doctor’s office.
As the receptionist, Shauna was able to be a benefit to the patients by sharing her gentle demeanor and compassion to help lessen their apprehension.
In 1999 she continued her teaching career as a substitute teacher at Holmes Elementary, Spokane Public School District 81.
She was hired fulltime at Holmes in 2001 teaching the second, and a combination third and fourth grade, sixth and finally the fifth grades until her illness in March of this year.
Shauna shared her kind and loving nature with all of her students and colleagues as she did with her family and friends.
Shauna was full of life and had a passion for dancing and shopping.
She furthered her communication skills by participating and advancing in Landmark Education.
Shauna trained for and participated in a triathlon and a couple of half marathons.
She loved to swim and was able to do so in the ocean while in the Marshall Islands and on a few vacations in exotic places.
Shauna enjoyed margaritas and having a good belly laugh with friends and family.
She was thoroughly fascinated with the beauty of and always on the lookout for a hawk flying and a dog she could love on.
Holidays were always a special treat for Shauna (especially Christmas).
She drove or flew from wherever she was living to spend Christmas with her family.
She loved helping with the decorating, cooking and sharing her laughter, joy and excitement with all of those around her.
She was able to engage her shopping gene while shopping for Christmas and birthday presents and regularly with her mother.
She loved and never missed creating Halloween costumes to wear for her class and to go out dancing.
Shades of purple and raspberry were her favorite colors and you could almost hear her purr while eating a pancake stacked with peanut butter, applesauce and a fried egg topped with maple syrup.
Shauna is survived by her husband, Eddie Rehfeld, stepdaughter, Casey Rehfeld, stepson, Parker Rehfeld, mother, Sharon Park, father, Ken Schutter and his wife, Renee Durnell Schutter, all of Spokane and her sister Tawni Schutter Calingaert and her husband, Chris, of Culver City, CA, numerous aunts, uncles, cousins and an enormous circle of friends.
Shauna was preceded in death by her grandparents, Dick and Betty Park and Pros and Florence Schutter.
Shauna’s family is inviting her family and friends to a “Celebration of Life” to be held August 8th, at 1:00 p.m. at the Spokane Valley Eagles to share their love and memories of Shauna.
A meal will be provided.
