Obituary: Humphrey, Herbert R.
Age 93
He was the son of Herbert and Winifred Humphrey, and the husband of Dorothy (Davis).
His quick wit and no nonsense outlook will be greatly missed by his family and friends.
Herb was born in Bliss, Idaho on August 18, 1922.
He spent his childhood in many Idaho and Southeast Oregon towns where his father was an agent for the Union Pacific Railroad.
He started his own career as a telegraph operator with the railroad where he and Dorothy met while working the night shift.
They were married in 1949 and raised four children.
Herb worked as a train dispatcher in the Pocatello and Nampa, Idaho offices and was instrumental in the war efforts in transporting equipment and soldiers during World War II.
While Dorothy was away visiting her sister Herb bought his first racehorse, a quarter horse mare named Bit O Charm, which started his second “career” as a racehorse owner and trainer in Pocatello.
He spent many years enjoying raising and working with his horses.
He especially enjoyed driving his chariot team at the races, earning the nickname “Ben Herb”.
He also enjoyed coaching little league, fishing, hunting and spending time with, and teasing, his grandchildren.
He is survived by his wife Dorothy, Spokane; children Mike (Cheri) Humphrey, Boise, Marjie Humphrey, Spokane, Chip (Susan) Humphrey, Portland, Janet (Skip) Ostrander, Spokane; his brother James (Aloha) Humphrey, Idaho Falls; and grandchildren Sean, Casey, Matthew Ryan, Mikaela, and Katie, two great-grandchildren, many nieces and nephews, and the whole Davis clan.
He was preceded in death by his parents, sisters Marjorie and Kathleen, and his brother Howard.
A graveside memorial service will be held at Queen of Peace Cemetery, 6910 Ben Burr Road, Spokane, Washington at 11:00am on Thursday, August 6th.
A memorial service in Boise, Idaho is also being planned.
