Wildfires: How to help
The American Red Cross says the best assistance is donations of money. Information on how to donate is found here.
Local businesses are collecting supplies for people who’ve lost their homes or belongings in wildfires throughout the state. You can drop off donations at the following locations:
Spokane area:
- Monterey Cafe downtown, 9 N. Washington St.
- Monterey Pub & Grub in Cheney, 321 W. First St.
- Fizzie Mulligans in North Spokane, 331 W. Hastings Road
- The Country Store (formally Aslin Finch) on the Newport Highway, both Valley locations and in Coeur d’Alene
- The General Store in Spokane (taking cash donations to buy supplies for firefighters)
- Pakootas for Congress campaign headquarters, 1410 W. Dean, accepting drop-offs on Sunday and Monday from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m.
Items needed:
For firefighters - tents, lip balm, water/sports drinks, socks, underwear, t-shirts, foot powder, gum/hard candy, non-perishable snacks, personal hygiene items
For residents - regular or air mattresses, cots, bedding, non-perishable/ready-to-eat food, water, sports drinks, both infant and adult diapers, formula, socks, personal hygiene items, gift cards
For pets - wet and dry pet food, cat litter, food dishes, kennels, leashes, blankets/bedding, gift cards.
For livestock - senior horse feed, grain, basic first aid for animals, hay, feed tubs, water buckets, water troughs.
NOTE - please do not bring household items or clothes.
Veteran’s Community Response is collecting donations to help wildfire victims in Omak, Stevens County and Kamiah, Idaho. The group, made up of Spokane Valley firefighters and combat veterans, will be collecting donations at the Spokane Valley Fire Station, 2120 N. Wilbur Rd. on Monday and Tuesday from 8 a.m.-5 p.m. They plan to deliver the items within 48 hours. Items that may be donated include:
- Non-perishable foods
- Fruits
- Diapers, size 1 and 2
- Men’s shoes, sizes 7-13
- Personal hygiene items
- Fuel cards
- School supplies
- Livestock feed
- Pet food
- Straw bales
The Intersection Church is accepting donations for fire victims and firefighters. Donations will be delivered to the Colville Confederated Tribes’ North Star Fire donation center at 41 Apple Way Road in Okanogan. Drop off donations at the church, 905 N. McDonald Road in Spokane Valley, from 8:30 a.m. to 4 p.m., Monday through Thursday. For information call (509) 924-3705.
Currently the donation center needs the following items, new or gently used only, please.
- boxes, totes, bins to haul donations to firefighter locations
- food, water, drinks (especially energy drinks and Gatorade)
- coolers
- gas, food, clothing gift cards and phone cards
- diapers, wipes and personal hygiene items
- laundry detergent, dish soap, cleaning supplies
- blankets, pillows, cots, air mattresses and towels
- socks and underclothes
- hay/horse feed, dog and cat food, water troughs
A GoFundMe fundraiser has been set up for Daniel Lyon, the firefighter critically injured in Twisp Wednesday. Lyon is being treated for severe burns at Harborview Medical Center in Seattle.
