Woman and dog injured in fire

A woman and her dog were injured in a house fire at 801 N. University Road in Spokane Valley this afternoon. When firefighters arrived at the home around 2 p.m. today the woman was in the front yard and there were smoke and flames coming from the front and roof of the house, said Spokane Valley Fire Department spokeswoman Melanie Rose. The woman sustained serious injuries and has been transported to Harborview Medical Center in Seattle. When firefighters searched the inside of the house they found the woman’s dog, who was given oxygen. “The dog was not in good shape when they found it,” said Rose. The dog was picked up by the Spokane County Regional Animal Protection Service and Rose said she had no further information on its condition. The cause of the fire is under investigation.
