Scam callers posing as fire department

The Spokane Fire Department has received several reports of scam callers seeking donations for fire victims. About five people told fire officials they’ve received calls from someone claiming to be from the Spokane Fire Department seeking donations with an initial payment of $100 or more, Assistant Fire Chief Brian Schaeffer said. Some of the callers asked for credit card numbers. “It looks like people are exploiting the situation and trying to get money using our name,” Schaeffer wrote in an email. The Spokane Fire Department does not solicit donations by phone. Donations to help fire victims can be made through the Northwest chapter of the American Red Cross.
