Flashing overnight traffic lights to end at some intersections

From staff reports

Some traffic lights in Spokane will remain operational 24 hours a day, as the city ends programmed flashing at four intersections on Wellesley.

Beginning Monday, Dec. 14, the city will stop setting traffic signals to flash during the early morning hours where Wellesley crosses Ash, Maple, Monroe and Wall streets.

The change comes because vehicle detection systems were recently installed at those intersections, allowing the signals to respond to a vehicle’s presence. The system will allow for better service during times of low traffic, and will provide round-the-clock operation of pedestrian signals at those intersections. Pedestrian signals do not work during the programmed flash hours of 1 a.m. to 5 a.m. on weekdays, and 2 a.m. to 5 a.m. on weekends.
