Man stabbed trying to retrieve his dead dad’s stolen ring

A man was stabbed recently trying to retrieve a ring belonging to his father that had been stolen the day the older man died.

Cassandra R. Hardy, 34, was arrested in connection with the case Tuesday and appeared in court Wednesday on charges of first-degree robbery and first-degree assault.

The victim told police that Hardy was a house guest on the day his father died in October. His mother noticed that his father’s ring and cell phone were missing, and said she saw Hardy standing near where the items had been, according to court documents.

The son confronted Hardy and she agreed to give the ring back if he paid her $250, he told police. He and a friend met Hardy in a grocery store parking lot at Mission and Hamilton on Nov. 2, where he handed the money to another man inside a car, according to court documents.

He was given a ring in return, but it wasn’t his father’s ring, he said. He demanded his money back, and the car began to leave. The victim grabbed the car and was dragged briefly before he was able to climb inside, according to court documents.

The victim said he felt himself being poked but didn’t realize he had been stabbed until he was shoved from the car, which sped away.

Hardy is being held in Spokane County Jail on a $25,000 bond.
