Chemical mixture creates scene at hotel

The Spokesman-Review

There was a bit of a stink at the La Quinta Inn and Suites on the edge of the Spokane Valley Industrial Park last week.

“Housekeeping had mixed a couple of chemicals that weren’t supposed to be mixed and created quite the scene,” said Spokane Valley Fire Department Assistant Fire Marshal Bill Clifford.

Crews were called to the hotel on Sullivan Road at 10 a.m. on Jan. 29.

The area was evacuated while crews worked to contain and remove the chemicals. One person was treated for breathing issues and taken to a local hospital, said Clifford.

Other calls from Jan. 19 to Feb. 1.

Jan. 19: Someone stole gasoline from a vehicle in the 11600 block of East Montgomery Avenue by punching a hole in the bottom of the tank. Crews cleaned up gasoline that spilled on the ground.

Jan. 26: A brush fire was reported in the 250 block of North Legacy Ridge Drive. The residents reportedly admitted burning up a Christmas tree. A broken gas line was reported at Argonne Road and Sprague Avenue.

Jan. 27: A kitchen fire caused by oil left on the stove damaged an apartment at 524 N. McDonald Road. The woman inside the apartment spotted the fire quickly and grabbed a nearby fire extinguisher to use on the flames.

By the numbers: Firefighters responded to 555 calls from Jan. 19 to Feb. 1, including 465 emergency medical services calls. The responses included 29 car accidents, two water main leaks, one child locked inside a car and two car fires.
