Obituary: Graybill, Eleanor Elizabeth (Hanneman) “Betty”

Age 86

GRAYBILL, Eleanor Elizabeth (Hanneman) “Betty” (Age 87) Died in Spokane on January 21, 2015.

Betty was born in Spokane, Washington on March 16, 1928 to Carl William and Eleanor Dorothea Hunziker Hanneman.

A breech birth, the family feared that their new daughter might not live.

Though she had cerebral palsy as a result of the circumstances of her birth, she lived a long and full life.

Betty’s lively intelligence, coupled with her mother’s determination to provide her with an education resulted in Betty’s graduation from Eastern Washington College of Education in the 1940s.

In 1956, Betty married Kent Graybill and together they operated the Kent Graybill Magazine Business from their home on Spokane’s South Hill.

After Kent’s death in 1994, Betty moved to Hawthorne Manor Retirement Home where she continued to lead an active life through her involvement at First Presbyterian Church, especially enjoying traveling with the “Keen-agers”.

In 2000, she was named “Volunteer of the Year” by the Inland Empire United Way for her work with the Food Bank.

Betty will be remember by all who knew her for her jolly spirit, her beaming smile, her optimistic attitude and her constant strength.

She was predeceased by her brother, Fred (2004) and is survived by nephews Thomas Hanneman (Honolulu), William Hanneman (Seattle), Andrew Hanneman (Georgetown, MA) and niece Mary Hanneman (Tacoma) and many friends, including Joe Griffin and his wife.

The family thanks the dedicated staff at Hawthorne Manor for the loving care they showed Betty during these last years.

A memorial service is planned for Friday, February 27 at 2:00 p.m. at First Presbyterian Church, 318 S. Cedar St.
