Report: Mariners prospect Victor Sanchez shows encouraging signs

PEORIA, Ariz. – The latest report from Venezuela says Mariners pitching prospect Victor Sanchez, while still unconscious, has made “some movements” with his hands and legs after undergoing surgery on his head.

Lavinotinto.com also reported Wednesday that Sanchez, 20, might require further surgery after being struck in the head by a boat’s propeller while swimming at Carupano on Venezuela’s north central coast.

The Mariners, in part due to federal health reporting laws, have only confirmed that Sanchez was hospitalized last Friday after being involved in an accident.

Sanchez underwent a craniectomy to drain hemotomas. A craniectomy is a procedure in which a portion of the skull is removed and not immediately replaced.

The Mariners signed Sanchez, a Venezuelan native, as a 16-year-old in 2011 for $2.5 million. He was 7-6 with a 4.19 ERA last season at Double-A Jackson.
