Men’s Top 25: Freshman Jahlil Okafor scored 24 points, Justise Winslow had 16 and No. 2 Duke broke open a tight game after halftime to beat Wofford 84-55 in Durham, North Carolina. Karl Cochran had 13 points to lead the Terriers.
• Kaminsky, No. 4 Badgers overwhelm Penn State: Frank Kaminsky had 18 points and 14 rebounds, Nigel Hayes scored 21 points and No. 4 Wisconsin beat Penn State 89-72 in Madison, Wisconsin. Penn State had its 10-game winning streak snapped.
• No. 6 Villanova beats Butler to go 13-0: Ryan Arcidiacono had 15 points and JayVaughn Pinkston had 13 to help No. 6 Villanova beat Butler 67-55, in Villanova, Pennsylvania. The Wildcats are 13-0 for the first time since 1937-38.
• No. 9 Iowa St routs Mississippi Valley St: Naz Long made seven 3-pointers and scored a season-high 24 points and No. 9 Iowa State cruised past Mississippi Valley State 83-33 in Ames, Iowa. MVSU lost its sixth in a row.
• Gibbs sparks Seton Hall past No. 15 St. John’s: Sterling Gibbs had 25 points and eight assists to lead Seton Hall over No. 15 St. John’s 78-67 in the Big East opener for both teams in Newark, New Jersey. D’Angelo Harrison paced St. John’s with 25 points.
• No. 16 Wichita St. beats Drake in MVC opener: Ron Baker scored 23 points, including 13 straight down the stretch, and No. 16 Wichita State opened league play with a 66-58 win over Drake in Des Moines, Iowa. The Shockers claimed their 22nd straight conference victory.
• No. 18 Oklahoma shuts down George Mason: Buddy Hield scored all but two of his 17 points in the first half and No. 18 Oklahoma shut down George Mason for a 61-43 win in Norman, Oklahoma.
No. 2 UConn women beat East Carolina
Women’s Top 25: Breanna Stewart scored 26 points and No. 2 Connecticut routed East Carolina 89-38 in Greenville, North Carolina, for its 10th straight win. Jada Payne had seven points to lead East Carolina.
• Indiana women roll past No. 24 Michigan St: Jenn Anderson scored 19, Tyra Buss grabbed a career-high 15 rebounds and Amanda Cahill had 13 points and 13 boards to lead Indiana past No. 24 Michigan State 70-51 in Bloomington, Indiana.
Clippers send Knicks to 9th straight loss
NBA: J.J. Redick scored 20 points and Los Angeles beat visiting New York 99-78, sending the Knicks to a year-ending ninth consecutive loss. Blake Griffin had 13 points, seven rebounds and tied his career high with 11 assists.
• Rally pushes Pacers past Heat: C.J. Miles scored 25 points, George Hill added 20 and the Pacers beat Miami 106-95 in Indianapolis. The Pacers have won six straight regular-season home games against the Heat.
• Harden leads Rockets over Hornets: James Harden scored 36 points, and the Rockets bounced back from consecutive losses with a 102-83 win over visiting Charlotte. The loss extends Charlotte’s skid to four games.
• Spurs edge Pelicans in OT: Manu Ginobili had 26 points and San Antonio avoided its fourth overtime loss at home in December, escaping with a 95-93 victory over New Orleans. San Antonio star Tim Duncan had 16 points and 10 rebounds, tying Hall of Famer Karl Malone for fifth in career double-doubles with 814.
• Knight leads Bucks past Cavs: Brandon Knight scored 26 points and visiting Milwaukee led most of the way in a 96-80 win over short-handed Cleveland, which played without LeBron James for the second straight game, sidelined because of a sore left knee.
Nielsen scores 2 goals and Islanders top Jets
NHL: Frans Nielsen scored two goals and added an assist, and the surging New York Islanders beat the Jets 5-2 in Winnipeg, Manitoba. Winnipeg captain Andrew Ladd scored both goals for the Jets.
• Lightning roll to beat Sabres 5-1: Ondrej Palat had a goal and three assists in Tampa Bay’s 5-1 win over Sabres in Buffalo, New York. Nikita Kucherov scored twice and added an assist, and linemate Tyler Johnson set up three goals for the Lightning.
• Connauton lifts Blue Jackets past Wild: Kevin Connauton had a goal and an assist and Sergei Bobrovsky made 28 saves to lead the Blue Jackets past Minnesota 3-1 in Columbus, Ohio.
• Maple Leafs top Bruins in shootout: Nazem Kadri and Mike Santorelli both scored in the shootout, lifting Toronto to a 4-3 victory over the Bruins in Boston. Phil Kessel had a goal and his 200th career assist. The Maple Leafs won for just the second time in their last seven games.
• Helm’s 2 goals lift Red Wings over Devils: Darren Helm scored two goals, and the Red Wings held off New Jersey 3-1 in Detroit. Helm’s unassisted tally with 4:25 left gave the Red Wings a two-goal cushion.
• Pavelski’s 2 goals help Sharks beat Ducks: Antti Niemi earned his 30th NHL shutout, and third of the season, with 28 saves, Joe Pavelski scored his second goal of the game during a two-man advantage, and San Jose dropped the Ducks 3-0 in Anaheim, California.
• Lehtonen makes 31 saves in Stars’ win over Coyotes: Kari Lehtonen made 31 saves for his 30th shutout, Brett Ritchie scored in his first NHL game and the Stars beat Arizona 6-0 in Dallas, for the Stars biggest margin of victory this season.
• NHL approves sale of Coyotes to Barroway: The NHL board of governors approved IceArizona’s sale of 51 percent of the Coyotes to Philadelphia hedge fund manager Andrew Barroway. In October, IceArizona agreed to sell the majority stake for $155 million. Barroway will replace George Gosbee as the team’s chairman and governor.
Dodgers sign pitcher Brett Anderson
MLB: The Dodgers signed free-agent pitcher Brett Anderson to a one-year contract. Anderson, 26, was limited to eight starts for the Rockies last season because of a broken left index finger and lower back surgery. He went 1-3 with a 2.91 ERA.
• Phillies trade OF Byrd to Reds: The Cincinnati Reds acquired outfielder Marlon Byrd and cash from the Philadelphia Phillies for a minor league pitcher. The Phillies got right-hander Ben Lively, who was the Reds’ minor league player of the year for 2014. Lively, 22, went a combined 13-7 with a 3.04 ERA in Class A and Double-A last season.
Saban wins Dodd Coach of the Year
College Football: Nick Saban, who led Alabama to the No. 1 seed in the inaugural College Football Playoff, has been selected the Bobby Dodd Coach of the Year in Atlanta, presented by the Chick-fil-A Peach Bowl and the Bobby Dodd Foundation. Alabama’s 12-1 season included the school’s 24th SEC title. The Crimson Tide will play Ohio State in tonight’s Sugar Bowl.
