In brief: Seton Hall upsets second ranked team

COLLEGE BASKETBALL: Freshman Khadeen Carrington hit a go-ahead layup with 1:38 to play in overtime and Seton Hall knocked off its second ranked foe this week, defeating No. 6 Villanova 66-61 in Newark, New Jersey on Saturday.

The Pirates ended the Wildcats’ school-record-tying 13-game winning streak to start the season.

The Pirates (12-2, 2-0 Big East) upset No. 15 St. John’s on Wednesday and came back to deny Villanova coach Jay Wright his 300th win with the Wildcats (13-1, 1-1).

Carrington finished with a career-high 17 points. Sterling Gibbs added 20 for the Pirates.

Daniel Ocheful had a career day for Villanova with 19 points and 24 rebounds.

Double OT win keeps Virginia unbeaten: No. 3 Virginia squandered a 19-point first-half lead and then came from behind in both extra periods defeating host Miami 89-80 to remain unbeaten.

The Cavaliers (13-0, 1-0 Atlantic Coast Conference) are off to their best start since 1980-81. Miami (10-4, 0-1 ACC) lost for the fourth time in the past six games.

South Carolina knocks off No. 9 Iowa State: Duane Notice scored 15 points and South Carolina picked up its first win over a top-10 team in nearly five years by defeating No. 9 Iowa State 64-60 in New York.

The Gamecocks held the Cyclones without a 3-pointer for the first time in over seven years.

Dunham’s season high lifts Butler: Kellen Dunham scored a season-high 28 points, including a pivotal 3-pointer with just more than 2 minutes left that helped Butler (11-4, 1-1 Big East) hold off No. 15 St. John’s 73-69 in New York.

D’Angelo Harrison matched his season high with 31 points for short-handed St. John’s (11-3, 0-2).

Jagr oldest to record hat trick in Devils’ win

NHL: A month shy of 43, Jaromir Jagr is still setting scoring records.

Jagr scored three times to pass Gordie Howe and become the oldest NHL player to record a hat trick, leading New Jersey to a 5-2 victory over the Philadelphia Flyers in Newark, New Jersey.

Jagr had his 15th career hat trick, first since March 26, 2006, against the Flyers while a member of the New York Rangers. Howe was 41 in 1969 when he had a three-goal game.

Predators hold off Kings in OT: Roman Josi scored 18 seconds into overtime after Pekka Rinne gave up three goals in the final 2:01 of regulation, and the Nashville Predators eked out a wild 7-6 victory over the Los Angeles Kings in Los Angeles.

Little’s three points lift Winnipeg: Bryan Little had a goal and two assists to stretch his point streak to six games and the Winnipeg Jets beat the visiting Toronto Maple Leafs 5-1.

Dustin Byfuglien and Ben Chariot each had a goal and an assist for the Jets and T.J. Galiardi and Matt Halischuk also scored.

Chariot’s goal was the first of his NHL career while Galiardi’s goal was his first scored of the season.

Streaking Hawks defeat Trail Blazers

NBA: Paul Millsap had 27 points and the Atlanta Hawks beat the Portland Trail Blazers 115-107 in Portland for their fourth straight win.

Jeff Teague added 22 points and the Hawks, playing the second game of a back-to-back, improved to 11-5 on the road, including six straights wins.

The loss snapped a four-game winning streak for the Trail Blazers, who have lost just three games at home this season. LaMarcus Aldridge led Portland with 30 points and 12 rebounds.

The Hawks led by as many as 20 points in the second half.

Spurs win 17th straight against Wizards: Cory Joseph had 19 points and San Antonio overcame Washington’s fast start to beat the Wizards 101-92 for the 17th straight time.

San Antonio has won 14 straight home games against Washington, but this was among the more unexpected.

With Tony Parker and Kawhi Leonard injured and Tim Duncan and Manu Ginobili struggling, the Spurs turned to the role players that helped them win a championship last season.

Tiago Splitter scored 16 points for San Antonio.

Bradley Beal and John Wall led the Wizards with 15 points each.

Davis’ double-double leads No. 6 Baylor

WOMEN’S COLLEGE BASKETBALL: Nina Davis had 21 points and 11 rebounds to lead No. 6 Baylor to a 61-45 win over No. 18 Oklahoma State in the Big 12 opener for both teams.

Khadijiah Cave added 15 points and Kristy Wallace had 11 for Baylor (12-1, 1-0 Big 12), which used a 31-6 run in the second half to take control.

Maryland uses big second half to defeat Nebraska: Shatori Walker-Kimbrough scored 24, Laurin Mincy added 22 and No. 14 Maryland used a big second half to beat host No. 12 Nebraska 75-47.

Maryland (11-2, 2-0 Big Ten) had more points in the second half (48) than the Cornhuskers (10-3, 0-2) scored in the game.

Gerrard leaving Liverpool for MLS

SOCCER: Steven Gerrard wants to win a trophy and lead Liverpool to a top-four finish in the English Premier League before he leaves his childhood club for Major League Soccer at the end of the season.

A day after Gerrard announced he will leave the club and play abroad, the long-time captain confirmed he will go to Major League Soccer, though he has yet to sign a deal with an MLS side.

Gerrard’s move to the United States will bring the curtain down on a 17-year career at Anfield, where he has won 10 trophies, including the Champions League in 2005.

Pardew takes charge of Crystal Palace: Alan Pardew has taken charge of Crystal Palace after swapping mid-table Newcastle to a team fighting against Premier League relegation.

Palace says Pardew signed a 3 1/2 year contract to manage the club he played for from 1987 to 1991, filling the void left by Neil Warnock’s firing.

Pardew had been at Newcastle since 2010 and Palace had to buy him out of a contract that ran until 2020.

Jones retains UFC light heavyweight title

MISCELLANY: Jon Jones retained his light heavyweight title in UFC 182, at Las Vegas, unanimously outpointing Daniel Cornier.

Jones improved to 21-1, receiving winning scores of 49-46 from all three judges. Cormier fell to 15-1.

In the co-main event, Donald Cerrone closed in on a lightweight title shot, unanimously outpointing Miles Jury.

• Kearney wins women’s World Cup moguls: American Hannah Kearney won the women’s World Cup moguls event and Canada’s Mikael Kingsbury topped the men’s field at Canada Olympic Park in Calgary, Alberta, for the fifth straight time. The 28-year-old Kearney, expected to retire at the end of the season, has 43 World Cup victories.
