In brief: Explorers earn awards in statewide competition

SPOKANE COUNTY – The Spokane County Sheriff’s Explorers took home prestigious awards from the Washington State Explorers Winter Academy.

Austin Powell received a second place award in shooting with a score of 294 out of 300 possible points. He also received a first place for overall performance in Basic Academy.

Bryson Trautman was among seven explorers selected to join the Academy Police Department which is comprised of explorers from across the state.

Trautman received the Winter Academy’s Academy Police Department Top Cop award for his leadership, initiative and knowledge.

The Sheriff’s Offices is proud of all its Explorers, wrote Deputy Mark Gregory in a press release.

Ribbon-cutting is Friday at SpokAnimal facility

SPOKANE – SpokAnimal is hosting a ribbon-cutting ceremony for its new event center located at 710 N. Napa St., at 3:30 p.m. Friday.

The House to Home Makeover show on Fox 28 has helped SpokAnimal do a renovation of the space, and it will air a 30-minute show on Feb. 14 about the project.

Mount St. Michael open to public this weekend

NORTH SPOKANE – Mount St. Michael is celebrating the centennial of the historic former Jesuit Catholic training grounds.

The event will be Saturday, 10 a.m. to 5 p.m., and Sunday, 1 to 4:30 p.m. at 8500 N. St. Michael’s Road.

Cost will be $5 per person and $2 for children under 12.

Guided tours will be given hourly. A new museum is opening this weekend. The Singing Nuns will perform on Saturday at noon and 3 p.m. and on Sunday at 2 p.m.
