Hotlanta! Hawks’ streak reaches dozen
NBA: Kyle Korver made a season-high seven 3-pointers on his way to 24 points, and the Atlanta Hawks beat the host Chicago Bulls 107-99 Saturday night for their 12th consecutive victory.
Al Horford added 22 points and nine rebounds as the Hawks matched the second-longest win streak in franchise history.
The Hawks (33-8) have won 26 of 28 since a 7-6 start, surging to the top of the Eastern Conference with one of the NBA’s most efficient offenses and a stingy defense.
Derrick Rose had 23 points, 10 assists and eight rebounds for Chicago, which has dropped five of seven.
• Curry, Thompson score 27 apiece in Warriors rout: Stephen Curry and Klay Thompson scored 27 points each and the Golden State Warriors used a huge third quarter to roll to a 131-106 win over the host Houston Rockets.
Golden State bounced back from a loss to Oklahoma City on Friday night that snapped an eight-game winning streak.
Dwight Howard, who missed the first two games against the Warriors, led Houston with 23 points and 10 rebounds on a night when the NBA’s leading scorer James Harden scored just 11.
Duke snaps slide, defeats Louisville
MEN’S BASKETBALL: Jahlil Okafor scored 14 second-half points, Amile Jefferson added 19 and No. 4 Duke dominated No. 6 Louisville inside for a 63-52 victory in Louisville, Kentucky.
Staggered by Tuesday’s 16-point loss to Miami that ended their 41-game home winning streak, the Blue Devils (15-2, 3-2 Atlantic Coast Conference) rebounded to throttle the Cardinals (15-3, 3-2) on their home floor and end a two-game slide.
Okafor finished with 18 points and seven rebounds as the Blue Devils finally put coach Mike Krzyzewski within two wins of 1,000.
• Iowa State wins second straight over Kansas: Naz Long scored 20 points and 11th-ranked Iowa State (13-3, 3-1 Big 12) held off No. 9 Kansas 86-81 in Ames, Iowa, recording back-to-back wins over the Jayhawks for the first time in 14 years.
Frank Mason III scored 21 points and Perry Ellis had 19 with 11 rebounds for Kansas (14-3, 3-1), the last team in the Big 12 to lose a conference game.
• Virginia continues best start since 1980-81 with win: Malcolm Brogdon scored 20 points and Virginia pulled away to beat Boston College 66-51 in Boston.
The Cavaliers (17-0, 5-0 Atlantic Coast Conference) continued their best start since the Ralph Sampson-led 1980-81 team won its first 23 games.
Olivier Hanlan had 18 points and six assists for Boston College (8-8, 0-4).
Detroit stops Nashville’s streak
NHL: Tomas Tatar scored twice, and Henrik Zetterberg added a clever tally from behind the goal line to help host Detroit snap Nashville’s five-game winning streak with a 5-2 victory.
Gustav Nyquist, Kyle Quincey and Tatar scored in the first period for Detroit, chasing Nashville goalie Carter Hutton from the game after only one save. Hutton was making his second start since the Predators lost Pekka Rinne to a knee injury.
• Canadians snap Islanders’ streak: Tomas Plekanec scored two goals and added two assists to lead Montreal past the visiting New York Islanders 6-4.
P.K. Subban, Dale Weise, Alex Galchenyuk and David Desharnais also scored for Montreal, and Dustin Tokarski made 27 saves.
New bleachers not ready at Wrigley
BASEBALL: The Chicago Cubs say new Wrigley Field bleachers won’t be ready for the season opener.
The left- and right-field bleachers are being replaced as part of a five-year overhaul of the ballpark that turned 100 last season.
The Cubs’ season opener is on April 5. But the team said that left field bleachers won’t be ready until early May, and the right in late May.
About 1,000 season-ticket holders can choose to get a full refund for games before May 11, a credit or relocate to the grandstand.
• Arizona signs Cuban prospect: The Arizona Diamondbacks announced an agreement with 21-year-old Cuban pitching prospect Yoan Lopez.
The 6-foot-4 right-hander played three seasons in Cuba’s top league, going 15-13 with a 3.76 ERA.
Walker looks to repeat at Sony Open
GOLF: Defending champion Jimmy Walker one-putted his last 11 holes on his way to an 8-under-par 62 and a two-shot lead in the Sony Open in Honolulu, giving him a chance to become the first player since Ernie Els in 2004 to successfully defend at the Sony Open.
• Kaymer takes lead in Abu Dhabi: Three-time winner Martin Kaymer shot a 7-under 65 to open a six-stroke lead in the Abu Dhabi (United Arab Emirates) HSBC Golf Championship.
Kaymer the U.S. Open champion who won the Abu Dhabi event in 2008, 2010 and 2011, had a 20-under 196 total.
Top-ranked Rory McIlroy was tied for fifth at 12 under after a 71.
Vonn’s all-time wins pursuit delayed
SKIING: A women’s World Cup downhill in Cortina d’Ampezzo, Italy, slated for Saturday was postponed by heavy snowfall, delaying Lindsey Vonn’s pursuit for the all-time wins record again.
Vonn needs one win to match Annemarie Moser-Proell’s record of 62 victories. The American was only 10th in Friday’s downhill in Cortina, which was won by Elena Fanchini of Italy on a shortened course.
• Neureuther wins World Cup slalom: Felix Neureuther won a World Cup slalom in Wengen, Switzerland, to retake the discipline standings lead from Marcel Hirscher of Austria, who leads the overall standings.
Michigan adds Wheatley to staff
MISCELLANY: Tyrone Wheatley is Michigan’s new running backs coach.
Wheatley returns to the school where he was a standout running back and track star. He ranks fifth on Michigan’s career rushing list.
Wheatley coached running backs for the Buffalo Bills from 2013-14. He also coached running backs at Syracuse, Eastern Michigan and Ohio Northern.
• UFC fines champion Jones $25K for cocaine test: UFC light heavyweight champion Jon Jones has been fined $25,000 by the mixed martial arts promotion for violating its code of conduct by failing a drug test.
Jones tested positive for the main metabolite of cocaine one month before his fight against Daniel Cormier on Jan. 3. He was allowed to fight because cocaine is not a banned out-of-competition substance under World Anti-Doping Agency rules.
• Troicki beats Kukushkin in 1st ATP final between qualifiers: Viktor Troicki of Serbia beat Kazakhstan’s Mikhail Kukushkin 6-2, 6-3 to win the Sydney International title in the first ATP final between two qualifiers.
