Area roundup: Dominique Keel paces WSU at meet
Eastern Washington took the top two spots in the women’s weight throw at the University of Washington Invitational on Friday in Seattle. Emma Murillo won the event with a toss of 61 feet, 8 1/4 inches. Kaytlyn Coleman was second at 59-7 3/4.
Dominique Keel led the Washington State women with a fourth-place finish in the 200-meter dash. Keel finished in 24.96 seconds.
WSU junior CharLee Linton took seventh in the 5,000 with a lifetime-best time of 16 minutes, 56.43 seconds.
Forrest Shaffer led the Cougar men with a sixth-place finish in the 5,000. He crossed in 14:24.20.
Dylan Watts led the Idaho men with a second-place finish in the pole vault (15 feet, 11 1/4 inches).
The meet concludes today.
Wrestling
North Idaho won eight of 10 individual matches and claimed a 25-6 victory over Western Wyoming at the Apodaca Duals in Powell, Wyoming.
Isaac Aguilar highlighted the Cardinals’ win with a 6-4 victory over Brett Jones at 133 pounds. The most dominant performance came from Tyler Booth, who claimed a 14-6 major decision over Western Wyoming’s Ezekiel Mamalis at 149 pounds.
Junior hockey
Tyler Wilkerson, Sean Collins and Jonny Marzec scored goals and the Spokane Braves (24-20-0-4, 52) edged the division- leading Beaver Valley Nitehawks (30-11-1-4, 65) 3-2 in a KIJHL game in Fruitvale, British Columbia.
Softball
Thanks to its stellar pitching, Whitworth improved to 3-1 with a nonconference doubleheader sweep of Pomona-Pitzer (0-2) in Claremont, California.
Madi Perez pitched all seven innings in the opener, giving up just three hits in the Pirates’ 6-0 win. She struck out four with no walks. Kelsey Stroshine hit a three-run home run in the seventh to lead Whitworth offensively.
In the nightcap, Makayla Lefever and Megan Fisher combined on a four-hitter. The Pirates won 7-1.
