Give and Take: Letters
Cougars must stop annoying gimmicks
In the ongoing saga of the deterioration of WSU athletics, Bud Nameck is fired. Forget the IMG network, this decision was made by the WSU athletic department. This is another in a series of totally confusing decisions, with the most prominent being the head football coach continuing to receive unquestioned extensions of his contract with no apparent need for production. Never mind that the man has no social skills or desire for connection with the fan base. Winning heals all, and with the Cougar athletics, there is a lot to heal. Unfortunately, healing doesn’t appear to be coming any time soon. Continuing to discard meaningful connections and sources of identity in lieu of the next trend or gimmick has no purpose. Please stop. Focus on what is really the problem – what is on the field.

Nameck knew what makes Cougars tick
After reading John Blanchette’s column in thr July 9 sports section, I felt I needed to comment on the letting go of Bud Nameck.
I for one am very sad as Bud knew Coug sports through and through. Just like Bob Robertson and Glen Johnson, when he spoke you didn’t need to see a face to know who was talking.
This new commentator, Matt Chazanow, may turn out to be OK, but as a long-time Coug, I feel they need someone who knows what makes the Coug nation tick and not someone who doesn’t have a clue. Bill Moos needs to get some backbone and stick up for local people and quit worrying so much about the almighty dollar.
I wish Bud the very best in the future. He will be missed.
