Predators sign Craig Smith to long-term deal

NHL: The Nashville Predators avoided arbitration with Craig Smith by signing the forward to a $21.25 million, five-year contract.

Smith, 25, has scored at least 20 goals in two straight seasons. Smith has 144 points in 277 career games with Nashville. The 98th overall pick in the 2009 draft has played for the United States in four World Championships since 2011.

Settlement talk ordered for Peterson

NFL: The NFL and the NFL Players Association have been ordered into settlement negotiations on the case filed in federal court by the union over Adrian Peterson’s suspension.

U.S. Magistrate Judge Janie Mayeron set a settlement conference for Aug. 13, a half-hour following a previously scheduled hearing on the case in front of U.S. District Judge David Doty.

• Titans receiver Hunter arrested for assault: Tennessee Titans WR Justin Hunter was arrested in Virginia Beach, Virginia, and is being held without bond for an assault that allegedly took place at a bar during the Fourth of July weekend.

Hunter, 24, was booked on a charge listed as malicious intent, stabbing, cutting, wounding.

Hammon, Spurs take Summer League title

NBA: The NBA’s first female summer league head coach has led her team to the title as Becky Hammon coached the San Antonio Spurs to a 93-90 victory over the Phoenix Suns in the Las Vegas Summer League championship.

Jonathon Simmons scored 23 points for San Antonio and took home MVP honors.

Last year the Spurs made Hammon the first female full-time assistant coach in league history.

Lynx trade injured Wright to Storm

WNBA: The Minnesota Lynx acquired guard Renee Montgomery and a second- round pick in 2016 from Seattle in a deal for injured guard Monica Wright.

Montgomery has career averages of 10.6 points, 3.2 assists and 1.8 rebounds in 23.8 minutes per game.

Wright has career averages of 7.9 points, 2.4 rebounds and 1.7 assists. The 5-foot-10 guard recently had arthroscopic surgery on her right knee.

• Shock owner plans to move WNBA team: Tulsa Shock majority owner Bill Cameron announced plans to move the WNBA franchise to the Dallas-Fort Worth market.

A group called Save Our Shock handed out 800 t-shirts on Sunday before the team’s loss to the Minnesota Lynx.

NCAA tweaks March Madness seeding

College basketball: The NCAA Division I Men’s Basketball Committee is making some changes to how it seeds teams for March Madness.

The committee will now have the flexibility to slide every team up or down the seed list, including the last four at-large teams. Until now, the last four teams voted in had to participate in the First Four. Now, the last four at-large teams on the overall seed list will play in the First Four.
