Obituary: Volk, George Leonard Lt. Colonel Usaf, Ret.

Age 95

VOLK, George Leonard Lt.

Colonel USAF, Ret.

March 22, 1920 - July 18, 2015 George was born in Aberdeen, South Dakota and served in the CCC camp that helped build Mt.

Rushmore.

He would then move to Salem, OR with his parents Maria and Anthony Volk and his eight brothers and sisters.

He then joined the USAF to begin his 28 year military career rising to the rank of Lt.

Colonel.

He would go on to belong to the elite Hurricane Hunters, flying over 25 missions based out of Bermuda.

He then married his wife of 20 years, Mardell Volk of Minneapolis, MN.

He served as an Air Force meteorologist and was awarded the Air Force Commendation Medal for his outstanding service.

He is survived by his sons Thomas and Allan Volk and their wives Lynn and Kim Volk; Allan’s daughter Angie Vegas of San Diego, her husband John and daughters Tylar and Cadie; and his grandkids Adam and Amber, and little Aliana; also Thomas’s sons Benjamin and Nicholas Volk of Spokane, WA; and also stepdaughter Kim Swindle of Salem, OR.

George had many friends both military and civilian and was known for his wonderful sense of humor and his knowledge of people and places he knew from having travelled all over the world.

George will be dearly missed by all who knew him but he will never be forgotten.

Rest in Peace George, you made our world a better place.

The graveside service is Friday, July 24th, 1:30 pm at the Washington State Veterans Cemetery, 21702 W. Espanola Rd, Medical Lake, WA 99022.
