Obituary: Ray, Dorothy Frances (Schweiger)

Age 86

RAY, Dorothy Frances (Schweiger) Passed away peacefully on Wednesday, July 22 in Spokane, WA.

Dorothy was born on January 10, 1929 in Mockonema, WA to Albert and Lucinda (Schreck) Schweiger, the eighth of nine children.

Dorothy was a longtime resident of Colfax, WA where she moved with her family as a child and where she made her home until 2007.

Dorothy attended Marycliff High School in Spokane, WA and after graduating in 1947, returned to Colfax where she met the love of her life, DeLoss Ray.

Dorothy and DeLoss married on November 23, 1949 and went on to have four children, Steven, Scott, Sandy, and Sharon.

Whether working as a telephone operator, taking care of her family, entertaining guests in their home, or sewing clothing for herself and others, Dorothy was a hard worker who put others’ needs before her own.

Following DeLoss’ death in 1998, Dorothy remained in the family home and continued to pursue her artistic hobbies and her devotion to her Catholic faith.

After suffering a stroke in 2007, Dorothy moved to Liberty Lake, WA where she filled her time with family trips to the casino, embroidery projects, and spending time with her children, grandchildren, and sister Barbara.

Dorothy is preceded in death by her parents, husband, four sisters, and three brothers.

She is survived by her brother Lewis Schweiger of Richland, WA; sons Steven (Janice) Ray of Spokane, WA, Scott (Robin) Ray of Liberty Lake, WA; and daughters Sandy (Paul) Hunt of Harrisburg, NC, and Sharon Ray of Phoenix, AZ.

Dorothy is also survived by her grandchildren, Scott (Lisa) Ray, Theresa (David) Loadman, James and John Fellers, Andy and Aaron Haase, Heather (Jeremy) Almond, Jake, Andy, and Ally Hunt, Kendra (John) Maly, and Jeff Harper, as well as by great-grandchildren Hailey Harper and Alexis Almond.

A Rosary service will be held at St. Patrick’s Church in Colfax, WA at 7:00 p.m. on Thursday, July 30 followed by a Mass of Christian Burial at 10:30 a.m. on Friday, July 31, also at St. Patrick’s Church.

In lieu of flowers, donations made in Dorothy’s name to St. Patrick’s Church Altar Society in Colfax or to the Hospice House of Spokane would be graciously appreciated.
