In brief: Justin Rose surges to 3-shot lead at Memorial; Tiger Woods with an 85

From Staff And Wire Reports

Golf: Justin Rose made an early surge Saturday at the Memorial, just like so many other players. He’s the only one who kept going on his way to a 6-under-par 66 that gave him a three-shot lead.

Rose missed only one green on the back nine as he started to pull away.

He was at 15-under 201. Francesco Molinari (69) and David Lingmerth (72) were tied for second. Jim Furyk had a 70 and is four shots back going into the final round today at Muirfield Village in Dublin, Ohio.

Tiger Woods finished his round when Rose was about to tee off, and it had everyone talking.

Woods hit a low with the highest score of his career – an 85. After opening with three straight pars, he missed a couple of short par putts, finished the front nine with consecutive double bogeys and ended his day of infamy with a quadruple-bogey 8.

He has as many rounds in the 60s as the 80s this year – two apiece.

Pettersen takes 1-stroke lead: Suzann Pettersen took a one-stroke lead in the Manulife LPGA Classic, making an eagle and four birdies on the first 11 holes and closing with seven pars for a 6-under 66.

Pettersen finished at 19-under 197 at Whistle Bear Golf Club in Cambridge, Ontario. Colombia’s Mariajo Uribe was second after a 67. Cristie Kerr, third at 17 under, also shot 67.

Calcavecchia grabs advantage: Mark Calcavecchia made a 15-foot birdie putt on the final hole for a 4-under 68 and a one-stroke lead heading into the final round of the Champions Tour’s Principal Charity Classic.

Calcavecchia had a 9-under 135 total at Wakonda Club in Des Moines, Iowa. Joe Durant was second after a 68.

Browns get punter Andy Lee from 49ers

Miscellany: The Browns acquired three-time Pro Bowl punter Andy Lee in a trade with the San Francisco 49ers.

The Browns also waived punter Spencer Lanning, who signed with the club as a free agent in 2013.

Cleveland sent a late-round 2017 draft pick to the Niners for Lee, who made the Pro Bowl in the 2007, 2009 and 2011 seasons. His days in San Francisco were numbered when the Niners drafted Clemson punter Bradley Pinion.

On-ice testing proposed at NHL combine: The NHL scouting combine’s move out of a convention center and into a hockey facility has prompted a discussion of what the next step might be in the annual event’s evolution.

Beyond bench-presses and stationary bikes, Columbus Blue Jackets general manager Jarmo Kekalainen is among several team officials in favor of adding an on-ice testing component.

The push for on-ice testing is gaining steam with the combine making the move to Buffalo, New York after spending its first 20-plus years inside carpeted convention center and hotel ballrooms in Toronto.

Dungey takes Tennessee National: Ryan Dungey won the Tennessee National at Muddy Creek Raceway in Blountville, Tennessee, for his second straight Lucas Oil Pro Motocross victory.
