All-Star FB game at Central Valley has 9 from GSL
Nine Greater Spokane League football players will suit up for the 51st annual 4A/3A all-star game.
They are: Jalen Hicks and Keegan Bray of Ferris; Justin Vogt and Taylor Duncan of Lewis and Clark; Tucker Stout of Central Valley; Kyler Ooley of Rogers; Nick Wood of Gonzaga Prep; Bryce Williamson of University; and Jacob Yedica of Mt. Spokane.
The game is July 3 at Central Valley. Kickoff is at 7. It’s the seventh time the game has been played in Spokane.
“I’m excited to work with quality football players and mostly kids who will go to college and represent the state well in a state all-star football game,” said Lewis and Clark coach Dave Hughes, who is the East head coach.
Hughes will be assisted by LC defensive coordinator Tom Yearout, Mt. Spokane coach Terry Cloer, Eastmont coach Doug McGill and Wilson coach Don Clegg.
Basketball
The 19th annual Washington/North Idaho all-state girls basketball games will be at the Hub Sports Center on Saturday.
There will be three games – B East vs. B West, 1:30; 1A East vs. 1A West, 3:30; and 3A/2A East vs. 3A/2A West, 5:30.
Admission for all games is $5 for adults and $3 for children 12 and under and seniors 62 and older.
Area athletes scheduled to play are: Cecilia Bergquist and Hailey Higashi of St. George’s; Megan Lee and Elaine Taft of Colville; Shaye Swannack and Jocelyn Cook-Cox of Lakeside; Sydney Sather of Freeman; Julianna Trepanier of Riverside; Maggie Cobb of Chewelah; Hadley Stratton of Newport; Erin Higbie and Rachel McGlothlen of West Valley; Melody Kempton of Post Falls; Allison Kirby of Timberlake; Jaclyn Meyers of Clarkston; Madi Schoening of Sandpoint; and Hannah Burland of East Valley.
Lakeside hires coach
Ron Cox is returning for a second stint as boys basketball coach at Lakeside.
A former standout at Eastern Washington University and a WIAA Hall of Fame member, Cox coached Lakeside from 1999-2005. He previously coached 20 years at Tekoa-Oakesdale.
“His knowledge of the game, ability to teach fundamentals and passion for working with youth have us excited to have him leading our boys,” Lakeside athletic director Jeff Pietz said.
Track
Pullman multiple event standout Lauren McCluskey recent placed fourth out of 20 competitors at the Great Southwest Classic heptathlon June 4-5 in Albuquerque, New Mexico.
McCluskey scored 4,522 points.
Here were her times/marks: 100-meter hurdles (15.13 seconds); 200 (27.59); 800 (2:27.40); high jump (5 feet, 3 inches); shot put (33-1¾); long jump (16-5¼); javelin (97-10).
• Joselynn Tensley of Central Valley took third at the Washington state high school hammer championships May 31 at CV.
Tensley heaved the hammer 136 feet, 10 inches. Siniva Areta of Ferris was fourth (136-5) and Elizabeth Bernbaum of CV was fifth (128-8). Haleigh Sudbeck of Camas won (154-7).
In the boys, Kirk Unland of Ferris took fourth (160-4) and Andrew Allen of East Valley was fifth (153-7). Tim Beard of Kamiak won (181-9).
• Nick Johnson of Gonzaga Prep took fourth at the Multi-Event (decathlon) state championship at Lake Stevens High School June 5-6.
Johnson finished with 5,815 points. Noah Martin of University took 10th (5,384). Ryan Chase of Capital won (6,821).
Here were Johnson’s times/marks in the 10 events: 100 (11.41, 4th overall); long jump (22-5¾, 5th); shot put (34-7¾, 6th); high jump (6-2¾, 4th); 400 (52.61, 8th); 110 hurdles (14.95, 1st); discus (69-8, 33rd); pole vault (8-10¼, 29th); javelin (155-1, 6th); 1,500 (5:40.26, 39th).
Martin won the high jump (6-9¾).
• Recent Mt. Spokane graduate John Dressel clocked 3:47.69 in the 1,500 at the Portland Track Festival, placing 43rd out of 63.
Justin Janke, a senior to be at North Central, took third in the mile in a time of 4:12.59.
Dressel will compete in the Brooks PR 2-mile this Saturday in Seattle.
CCS signs seven
The Community Colleges of Spokane women’s basketball team has signed seven to letters of intent.
They are: Madison Giovanna (Reardan); Imana Guillory (Lewis and Clark); Kristine Lawson (Middleton, Idaho); Cali Moscrip (Lewiston), also signed to play soccer; Hayley Niles-Williams (North Thurston); Kierstyn Russell (Mead); and Katlyn Summers (Priest River).
• Ben Blakely of Lewis and Clark has signed to play soccer at Pacific Lutheran University.
Blakely was a four-year starter at defender.
Coach resigns
After a highly successful 16-year run as Timberlake softball coach, Mike Menti, 43, has resigned.
Timberlake qualified for state in each year under Menti, whose teams had a combined 292-138 record. His teams won or shared 10 Intermountain League championships and 11 district titles. The Tigers also captured four state trophies including finishing runner-up in 2007.
Menti resigned to spend more time with his family. No successor has been named.
