Overheated ceiling light starts house fire, couple escapes

An elderly couple safely escaped their burning home last week after a recessed ceiling light started an attic fire.

The fire in the 11000 block of East Cataldo Avenue was reported around 6:30 a.m. Sunday. The fire was traced to a recessed ceiling light, said Spokane Valley Fire Department spokeswoman Melanie Rose.

Insulation had been placed on top of the light and a 100-watt light bulb had been placed in the fixture, which was supposed to have a 40-watt bulb in it, Rose said. The combination of the two made the fixture overheat.

Damage to the home is estimated at $10,000, and about $20,000 in damage was done to the contents, Rose said.
